You beat me to it . I went to see Silver Dream Racer at the pictures when I was 16, first date with a new girlfriend. If I remember correctly, the guy machined his gears to be narrower and save weight. As we all know this can affect the handling and it did. He died in the end.

Well it's all done now & recommissioned.
Fairly straightforward:
Thoroughly cleaned everything I could reach Stripped all brake calipers, fitted new seal kits & pads (EBC HH)- new fluid in brakes and clutch too New Bridgestone S 22's Sorted the collector and silencer plus serviced the EXUP valve itself Carb service kits x4 and carb set up, balanced with new Pipercross air filter New Plugs & trimmed a couple of the HT Leads New battery Fuel tank de-rusted and lined New fuel pipe, new fuel filter New EBC HD clutch friction plates, clutch cover gasket & springs (original clutch came off in 2 clumps and were pretty well stuck together New Yamaha oil filter & Motul 5000 10w40 New number plate & fitted the original rear muddie extension Adjusted rear shock which seems in good order.
Next is an MOT and put some miles on it. May well then fit the Ohlins fork springs and get the OE shock serviced plus I have some -5mm linkages to try that lift the rear ~25mm. Will try the standard gearing before going -1/+1
It's cracking & honest 1 owner (+ me) EXUP that will give years more service yet. Motor starts and runs absolutely lovely.
Roll on spring 23!

Should add that the original fuel tap was rotten and new coolant used too although what was in it was perfect.

Really like your EXUP.
For a while now I have been debating getting rid of my MT10SP and going ‘all classic’
I have a Fazer 600 and previously had a 1000 so that would’ve been a classic contender but your EXUP has really given me some food for thought.

I was thinking about doing something similar and getting a YZF750R. However, with the ever expanding ULEZ zones I foresee a time in the not to distant future when you won't be able to go anywhere without having to pay a tax to do so.

It is really easy nowadays to spank >£20k on a new bike and yet there are still bikes like this around for 1/10th that cost. The EXUP riding position is low and long, so very different to most modern ergonomics. I too like the idea of a warranty free stable of bikes & working on the EXUP, LC, Bonnie etc is part of the fun. I've also got a 1250GS & SFV4S that I wouldn't dream of taking a spanner too!! The EXUP motor is super smooth & the 5 speed gearbox is wide (I've standard gearing on at present, but may change that) so it's a relaxing ride that takes off if you want it too. I think modern bikes & technology are great too, so for me I'll keep the classics & modern side by side for now.

Best get one sooner rather than later then! With the expansion of the ULEZ to Greater London due to happen in May next year it would give me about 3 weeks of use before I can't go and visit my friends of family on my bike. I have to sadly conclude that it's not worth it. And waiting until it's 40+ years old wouldn't be an option either as a 90's bike won't be exempt until the 2030s.

I have had the seat padded up a little to increase the leg room, and also a ZZR11 front end which has slightly higher ‘bars. Its really nice to ride and the one I always choose for any distance on A roads or motorways. Maybe the EXUP will be too similar to that – I will have to try one out.

Well to close this off the mighty EXUP passed it's MOT yesterday with flying colours & lot's pf positive comments from the bike mad local indy dealer. MOT 10.02.23 by KTM Marky, on Flickr It's a manky print that reads previous MOT history as: 28.07.2009 18,830 miles 28.10.2010 18,892 miles 25.05.2012 18,898 miles 10.02.2023 18,949 miles
Sat for the best part of 11 years untouched and now back to life:
RHS Outside by KTM Marky, on Flickr
A super smooth flexible motor & as fast as you want still today. The S22's need running in & the +5mm dog bone links have lifted the rear nicely. Brakes are now strong after refurbishing them. so good to go!
