So I was lucky enough to be introduced to the one and only owner of this 1989 EXUP.
<19k miles, totally standard, last on the road in 2013 and really not used since 2006 when the chap bought a new R1 (which my mate bought with 2500 miles on the clock). it had 16.5k on the clock in 06. Had a big service with new C&S, carb rubbers, fork seals etc only a few thousand miles ago. Obviously age related storage stuff to sort out. Tank undergoing internal treatment, but the fuel tap was corroded which actually was good news as it blocked the path for any crud to get to the fuel pump. Fuel in the pump was a little off, but I’ve purged that out & carb side the fuel was fine. Battery is toast and have a new one ready to put on. Hopefully it’ll fire up now.
I always wanted one of these back in the day, so I’m really chuffed to now have this one. Original receipt present and I’m assured the supplying dealer (PH Allins in Cambridge, long gone noe) only ever sold 2 Silver EXUPs.
classic TT 2023 transport I’m thinking.

Wow! What a beauty! That looks like a really smart buy, looks to be in fantastic condition.
Never hear a bad word about these bikes and it is a lot of bike for the money (i'm guessing!).
Hope you get it going easily.

Had a poster in the early 90's of that exact bike and loved it
Owned one 97 - 2000 and it was awesome
First bike I'd owned that would pull past 160
Never owned anything since that gave a kick in the kidneys in the midrange like it since
Happy days 😀

Just repeating what everyone else is saying really. Lovely looking bike. A step up from the GSXR1100 I had.
In 1992 when I had my 1100 I was offered an RU for good money but didn't fancy going to the TT on a bike I'd bought just that week so stuck with the Suzuki.

Got it started today with the first push of the button once a new battery was fitted. Motor sounds pretty good to me.

I think you're right with the film soundtrack & Hawkwind had a song 'Silver Machine'.

Silver Machine reached #2 in the charts. The only Hawkwind single ever to get into the top ten. And it's about riding a silver bicycle whilst tripping on magic mushrooms...

I really thought these would be toast and for a re-chrome. Investigated today and a 10 week lead time got me working a bit harder. Tried scotch brite and stones, but not good enough so got them in my lathe (just!!) and some 400 wet n dry at a medium spindle speed. Kind of a manual Centreless grinder. I think they may just be ok!! Flamin miraculous!!

I say polish them highly now or they will rust fast, and then keep spraying with ACF50, I have done similar in the past but without use of a lathe, you have to keep a close eye on them after doing anything like this, but I found as long as polished and then kept oiled its fine.
Only done parts and not whole stanchion myself, but if just left they rust fast I found.

The forks I can keep on top of & I'll not leave it sat for 16 years so that should help.

I may have taken more off than you, who know, but I thought it worth a mention, can't do any harm doing it can it, and may save you finding them all rusty again through condensation.

The skin is very hard so unlikely to actually noticeably remove material with the wet n dry.
