Looking forward to selling my LC and buying a modern bike this winter. Primary use will be out of town hooning. Fast rural two-lane highways/B roads, twisties out to the coast, multi-day sport-touring (heavy on the sport). Not much on the slab (boring!), not much around town (that's what my TDR's for), and no dirt or DS (got my plated 300 for that). No fcuking wrench time in the garage, except bolting on accessories. I've got a short list of bikes I'm considering. Most will need to be a few years old to stay within a budget of < $9k/8kGBP (or whatever I can get for my LC (probably a bit less)). I'm partial to Yamahas and KTMs, but will certainly entertain all options. What would you buy? ... and don't worry, I'll never sell my TDR.

A nice position to be in 😎
I recently bought a new XSR700 for rural fun but not touring because it’s not comfortable enough on long journeys. I would consider the MT-09 or Tracer 900 as a sports tourer.

I'm also considering another modern bike having just sold my CB1300, my current top 3 are 790 Duke, 660 Tuono, and 1200 Thruxton R.

My current list is: MT09 790 DukeR 690 SMCR
I had a Daytona 675, and really liked it. Street Triple would fit ge bill as well.

I'd buy another LC Alex I do love my strokers, Alex, but need a big boy bike for longer rides. Here where I live, it's just a short blast over Mt Hood to eastern Oregon, where 110mph cruising speeds, no traffic, and no cops are the norm. I've ridden out there a lot on my TDR/3XV, but listening for signs of impending doom all day is just too fatiguing anymore. I just wanna unplug the Battery Tender, push the button and go. Ride fast and far, and not worry if I'm gonna make it home

Very large exhausts and ridiculous number plate mounts. What about an older 4 stroke? A big Kwak Z? Any Suzuki would do as well. But I'm sure you'll find something you really like and love it to bits! Alex

Was in a similar position myself earlier this year.
I went and test rode a Yamaha R6. Absolutely nothing wrong with it but I’m sorry to say I hated it. To me it was a bland, soul less video game of a bike.
I thought maybe a Triumph Street Triple might fit the bill but haven’t got around to trying yet
In the meantime I’ve been riding my LC and absolutely loving it. There’s nothing on the planet quite like an LC on song.

Many of my friends ride 790/890 Duke R. They (mostly) all rave about them, but they've not proven to be 100% reliable. Mostly electrical gremlins if I remember correctly. Would be top of my list, but probably out of budget. Might be able to find a 790, but more likely will go with the more reliable and cheaper Japanese offerrings.

Older is out, as last thing I want is another project to wrench on.

A mate of mine bought a brand new MT07, I looked at it and thought, I wouldn't buy one, he offered me a go, I got on it, opened the throttle and the wheel was straight in the air, it was like an RM250 or something similar for wheel lifting, not so fast top end end wise, but getting there was epic, I had a massive smile on my face when I got back, it handled beautifully, light and nimble, I still don't like the look, but the performance was great.

I love my Triumph Street Triple 765RS. Excellent for hooning around on. Sounds awesome when you get over 7000rpm even with the standard pipe.

Would be top of my list, but probably out of budget. Might be able to find a 790, but more likely will go with the more reliable and cheaper Japanese offerrings. Never had any problems with reliability on mine, (thats asking for it) the build quality is fabulous, I read that the quick changers were moody early on but mine is one of the early ones and apart from a habit of a false neutral regularly between 5 - 6 there is nothing more to say, mine has 8k on it and I spank it a lot. Boring, its anything but, as for the look, for years I was in denial with modern bikes, for instance I ignored slabside gixxers, (I'm upset with myself about that)and after ignoring everything after my GPZ600R untill 2000 when I bought a zx6r j1 the difference in performance was like a new dawn to me I couldn't believe it. Fast forward to the more or less cripple I am today, can walk but not great, have piss poor balance when on my feet, can walk a max of 2 miles before my legs are that tiered i'll trip over grass, I can't really trust the strength of my legs on a big bike anymore, 200kg is about the max so at 160kg the KTM is perfect, thing is I'm still a competative b*****d but in normal life I'm not really competing at anything, on this bike I'm faster than I ever was so its nice to still be capable every now and then of rolling back the years. Besides, it wouldn't do if we were all the same would it. Andy
