His career has spanned 6 decades, and has given us some great characters from Just William to Terry McCann plus the odd 'feem tune'. But let's be honest... it was George Carter in The Sweeney that was the hero figure of our youth. 74 just doesn't seem so old these days!😲

What a shame. I grew up watching stuff like The Sweeney and Minder.

I was surprised learn of this. The thing is, the shows he was in will always be around / available. I still watch them because I can hardly find anything decent to watch on TV now. We might be the only ones to realise that but it doesn't matter. Only recently watched Minder on the Orient Express.
Not much of an age at all.

Still rate 'The Sweeney' as the best ever cop show. I bought the whole series on DVD and it looks as though it was made yesterday, except for the clothes and cars! There was real chemistry between John Thaw and Dennis Waterman.

There was real chemistry between John Thaw and Dennis Waterman. Mouse I watch them almost as much for what you see in the background. The cars, the clothes, the empty streets, the pubs and clubs. They're like a history lesson. I remember kids at school talking about what happened last night on The Sweeney. I couldn't join in because my parents sent me to bed before it came on. I guess it was a bit err, edgy for a 10/11 year old.

great watching the Sweeney, no way would the law get away with it nowadays, to PC now!! They're not going to sit across the road in the car watching the villains in a shop because there's never anywhere to park within 100 yards.. They'd be driving round and round the block looking for a parking spot.
