Tried it Tim. It stretches and fits and sticks down. 2 minutes later it's all unstuck and bunched up. Original parts (I think) were formed to fit the arch but of course none available. But I will phone Spitsbitz tomorrow (breakers) to see if they have any.

Where did you get the hair dryer from? Dusty and his luxurious B Pitt mane?

Heat gun. Dusty's quiff needs four hair dryers and several attendants to achieve that astounding look Alex

Weird problem, what say the Triumph forum lads? this must surely have happened to someone else before?

They all say the same thing. Hair dryer/heat gun. I've tried doing it in sections, ie glue one area and let it dry then move on to another, and all in one go. Nada. Spitsbitz has none. Though they do have some MK3 seats. So rusty as to be beyond any economical repair, yet £175!

I thought that too Jon but this is stuff I've been using for aeons and is very very sticky. Carpets went down fine using it. What I am thinking of doing is to stretch a couple of sheets over a spare wheel in the sun and see how that affects it. Might 'form' it a little bit and make it more pliant.

Sorry mate! I haven't been driving her in this heat...bad enough in my other car. However my soft top should be here in about a week and now that the weather has finally broken (was 40C here today, now 28c and thunderstorms) I plan to go and get the soft top frame blasted and powder coated. When the hood is all done and fitted I'll finally have a daily driver. Almost. Still need the hand brake sorting and that will be done ASAP. I also need to adjust the idling screws on the carbs and swap out the fuel filter. And drain the coolant and fill with fresh. And an oil and filter change (even though the oil is new...best be on the safe side!).

More carb shenanigans. I asked on the Triumph forum what carbs I have and got so many different replies I still have no idea. But I got some numbers off the sides and have asked again. Deffo 1.25" SUs though. So today I got the fuel line off for a clean up and to change the rubber hoses for ones not made in 1967. The line is clearly not for my car. It's been bent to fit! Another item on the 'to buy' list! So when I finally find out what carbs they are I'm getting pancake filters for it. Most of the Triumph crowd seem to think this is madness, citing jetting and poor running etc and I can't understand WTF they are banging on about. Had them on several Spits before with no issues at all. Just a nice intake roar from the carbs. Oh well. I don't want to offend any of them so I'll fit the filters on the sly! Alex

Fuel leak!! Thought it might be from the new hoses I put in but turns out it was coming from a tiny hole on top of the float bowl chamber. Thing is why? Haynes manual really helpful...not, but the Triumph lads came up trumps suggesting it was the float bowl needle. I dismantled it all and cleaned it and poked through the hole with some thin wire and hey presto! Leak fixed.

Bit more fettling. Using some measurements from the Triumph lads I knocked up a backing board for the boot and covered it in vinyl. Not too shabby! And ordered yet more stuff. A new suspension coil, a washer bottle and an expansion tank...this one is deffo from'67! Alex

Lots more progress. Had a phone call from the hood suppliers and he tells me I can have one with a zip out rear window (more expensive) for the same price as my standard one and it'll be here next week. Yes please. The frame is back from the powder coaters so that's all ready to go on. Fitted my new windscreen washer bottle and expansion bottle too. And then the new air filters. The original airbox will go to get powdered just in case there is an issue with the new filters and it's always a good idea to keep all the stock parts! Tuesday she gets her new coil put on and I'll see if that improves the heavy steering. If not I'll get everything aligned as that might be causing it. Alex

Looking good Alex! I had pancakes on mine and it was fine. Mine might have been wider tho? you could redo the fuel pipe to fit better if you had some, it should be 'square' and clip to one of the inner carb domed nuts with a clamp to stop it wavering about. Easy jobs. The brakes lines look an aftermarket cooper set has been fitted, names escapes me but used on all old cars over the years. Ive had no issue with the pipes themselves but these are DIY hand bent to fit.... and most DIYers dont understand that old tins and bottles and cans make great curves, better still Aldi sell a cheap pipe bender when they do specials which works well enough. Oh and you need engine mounts... sorry... my beady eyes are still in action.

Engine mounts? I shall have a dekko tomorrow. Now that is an easy job, done it before. Jack up engine, swap mounts, done.

I used t have a MK3 spitfire it had pancake filters fitted. In summer it was fine in winter it used to caugh splutter, even though I balanced carbs with vacume gauges. And set mixture with a colour tune on number 1 and number 4. It ran much smoother but not any power speed difference. I had a 1500 MK4 that had a down draught Webber fitted, just 32/36 from a escort. It made no end of difference in acceleration used to rip through the gears

I spotted that today when I went to get the coil swapped out. Turns out the coil is ok, it's the shock that's bent! Ordered a new set...
And my new hood has arrived. I really don't want to do this myself and the nearest company that will fit it is miles away. However the chap at my local garage suggested a marine company that specialises in making and fitting hoods. Seeing they are about 4 minutes away I'll pop in to see them tomorrow.
And I've decided to buy the twin exhaust set up complete with manifold. Hell, it's only money lol.

Interesting the shock is bent, i did wonder if that side of the car was higher or something in the pic but that would do it. Tracking check after in case they bend something else? Easy swap on these cars of course. I bought complete shock assys aftermarket back in the day... then broke one of the top studs off when fitting... dont over tighten... so had to strip it anyway lol Good idea on the hood. So many DIY bad jobs on hoods out there. The pros will tension it right etc. Ohhh! Cooool! It'll sound like my old one. will need a sound clip i fear

Oh and when i said clip the fuel pipe to the airfiler nuts, that was with something like a stainless/rubber P clip.
Just trim the rubber hoses down and the fuel pipe will come 'in' towards the filters. But maybe not easily as its not 'square' as the outer edge is too long as mentioned before. Maybe just make another pipe up the correct length if you want to do this, the steel pipe is just generic.

Jon I know what you mean about the fuel pip clips. However early MK3's (like mine) didn't have them. And the airbox was black and not silver like all the rest. Trying to keep her as stock as possible (period mods are allowed though!).
Ordered some new shocks too, they should be here tomorrow and got some used quarter panels and the moulded wheel arch covers from Spitbitz. They turned up today and need a bit of restoring so that is underway. £50 for stuff that fits from them or £180 for stuff that doesn't from Rimmers. No brainer really.

Alex No worries, but I reckon they added the clip cos it was needed is what im saying. Having that pipe bounce up n down might have been found to froth the fuel or something? Good news on the other parts. Its defo coming along well as a rolling resto. I wonder if they swapped the black for silver to help keep the air temps down? One thing to watch for when driving in rain is that with pancake filters hanging over the wheel is that if you hit a big puddle you can fill the intake with water and also water does find its way into the filters off the road which isnt ideal, it isnt a huge issue unless you drive through a ford flat out as Ive spoken about before lol I expect youre on this already but I'd also replace those last few bits of the fuel hoses. I say this as I dont trust the look of the old pipe and defo dont like those cable ties, instead use some of those clamp ones that you use pliers on. Cheap insurance to keep the fuel flow good and inside the system etc.

I agree mate. Fuel lines will be finished when the weather breaks. It hit 34c here today and hotter tomorrow. Here are the Spitbitz parts. Not too bad at all. I had to recover one as the paint stains on it would not shift at all. The other one just needed a clean and a few new staples. However looking at them together I think I'd better cover the other one to match! Alex

Good work Alex. 34... ahh... thats nothing... even for the uk, remember it was 39 2 weeks back Im sure 34 wont be pleasant with the setup in the uk for cooling so hear your pain. Amusingly (?) in the july heatwave I was in the East End on the record breaking monday / tuesday and most places were shut and there were very few people out n about as the news told people to stay in so london was a ghost town. The trains and tubes were broken, with no service or huge delays. We ambled up Brick Lane which had zero tourists and all the crazies and rough sleepers were out and about instead of blending/hiding like usual - in fact rather than say 1 in 100+ it was greater than 1 in 2 on monday evening. In the queue for a salt beef bagel I was hassled by a guy for money who I saw/heard in the street doing the same to another guy, he was fronting up and wanted a fight if no cash came his way and was shouting in my face that i was 'having a laugh' and ramping it up to punch on, bit of a mistake i felt but i couldnt defuse him and it was getting uncomfortable for my wife and I, then one of the girls behind the counter totally flipped out, threw her slat beef cutting knife hard across the shop and launched herself at one of the guys who worked there who was obviously hassling here, she was totally trying to attack him and kill him, total red mist stuff. At this point we left, the atmosphere was electric and you could tell more violence was on the cards. Heat warps the mind...

I got covid as well, but thats another story lol The worst thing in the salt beef shop was a couple of other other bloke customers leant over the counter to the bloke who was hassling the girl and started with the whole 'women!? what can you do?!' routine. Very un 2022. sigh. I felt that she was being bullied or harrased in some way by the guy and these guys were making it worse. delightful.
