They do give the car a more, ahem, audible note. More growly and raspy and I like that. And I'm still discovering that certain parts are now unobtanium. My choke knob is off a MK4...no Mk3 ones anywhere. However there is a solution. Paddocks sells a MK2 one but it has the wrong decal on it. Then a chap on the Triumph forum sends me a MK3 replica decal for nowt. A lovely gesture and it reminds me very much of a certain Yamaha forum I know... Alex

Ahh Paddocks... In the 90s they used to be about a mile from where i lived in their old building. I was there quite a bit as you might imagine. Really nice set of helpful blokes back in the day. Manys the day i rocked up on their carpark with something dying on my car and they would have a used or new spare part for me. Sat morns they were quiet and the carpark empty, I did a good few repairs there if things were 'exchange' lol My dad reckoned me working on my car on the driveway brought the neighbourhood down i think, plus he didnt want oil on his block paving when he had it done (haha) and scared us enough that me and my mates (and my sisters suitors) had to park in the street so as not to incur his wrath lol. So working in Paddock's car park ticked a lot of boxes for me, not least as i could ask the blokes for advice and extra parts needed even if they wouldnt actually come and help, but would have a listen and a look and point a bit and offer advice lol. I had a small army surplus ammo box of tools to my name offset by a big bag of enthusiasm to do things myself lol
I know 500 quid is a lot on the face of it, but for what it is its a bargain. Its all in the context of 2022, ie same system for a modern car like the GRY is 3-5x that and its got a lot less stainless in it!

I know Steve. It IS cheap for what it is and stainless too. But for now I think I'd better keep my sensible head on and concentrate on paying for bits the car actually needs! However it is on my saved list at Rimmers. Along with about another £2ks worth of stuff!
Lovely little story Jon. I had the same issue. My mum would never let me park any of my Spits on the driveway. They all liked to leave a little puddle as a gift...well, that's what I told her...
I do recall that my dog would know when I was coming home by the sound of the car!

Is the Rimmers exhaust better/cheaper than the TSSC BELL version? I just found the TSSC page, the one with the manifold is £500, the one without is only £300. I remember seeing these prices when we talked about you getting a spit before and thought they were good value. This is what i had on my car in the 90s and it sounded great I thought. shop.tssc.org.uk/category/spitfire?page=0%2C2

Thanks for the link Jon. Pity there's no pic but I will be phoning them about it. And it's a damn site cheaper too! I whipped the roof off today. Well, I struggled and managed to get it off. Metal, heavy and unwieldy too! Then went out for a spin. What a feeling. Like I was 18 again, except without spots. Alex

The Bell system was decent quality when i had one, I doubt theyve changed it much but its worth asking on the forums and seeing some pics id think.
Cars looks great without the roof. I bet its a lot quieter too!

A LOT quieter! Last night I loosely fitted the hard top back on (rain, cats, foxes etc) and today it was rather cloudy so I bolted it back on...and promptly sheared a bolt. Checked eBay, then Rimmers, than Paddocks. The latter had those at the cheapest price (and cheapest delivery) so I got those, the backing board (where the fuel tank sits) and a MK3 choke knob. Saved about £70 over Rimmers price. Also they have the twin silencer kit. £271. Yes please!
On another plus note it turns out I have the later MK3 screen so the soft tops and frames are easier to come by. I mentioned this on the Triumph forum and Clive (remember him?) has a frame I can have. And thankfully next weekend he'll be 8 miles away visiting his daughter so that saves me a 120 mile round trip to Hove and also saves my back. Corrugated motorways, what arse thought that was a good idea??

Haha, as soon as you said 'backing board' I knew what you meant. it all comes flooding back... hopefully not like my petrol did when i drained the full tank when it was leaking... er... haha. Sounds like the community is also the way that to own a Triumph like it is with an LC.

It is Jon. A great bunch of lads (and a few lasses) but I think I'm the youngest member on there...
Had an email from the couriers delivering my Paddocks order.
We will notify you the same day we deliver your parcel at 22.00 hours. Hmm. Between 10 and midnight hey?

Paddocks goodies arrived. Correct choke knob and I have the decal. It's a dash out job to fit and I need to do this anyway to change all the bulbs. Not looking forward to that at all. The sheared bolt in the hardtop will not budge so I had to cut it off. The only way to remove it is to strip all the headlining. Bummer. And the backing board had a trial fit along with the first bit of new carpet. She looks so much better! Alex

The good thing about opening the dash up is you can tidy up any spaghetti and make it easier for the next time you have to open it.

I cant see many millennials wanting to own a vehicle that needs to be worked on as much as an old Triumph sadly.

Great work there. That backing board looks like a late 70s or early 80s attempt at ICE. Probably had some 'Realistic' speakers thrown in and cabled up with bell wire. Noice!
For some reason I assumed the backing board you meant was the one covering the tank in the boot.
What is covering the rear arches? If its nothing, you will defo cut down the noise when driving with the top on/hood up by covering that with carpet.
No way to weld a nut on the end of that sticky up bolt and get it out? I assume the issue is the flammable and ruin-able parts nearby? Vice grips might do it after some penetrating oil?

The rear arches need carpet but don't come with my kit so I need to find some. As for that bolt...I have found that the inner nut that should be welded inside the roof has come adrift. No chance of getting to it without a lot of cutting and welding. But...I should be getting my soft top frame this weekend and that will be used 24/7 so the hardtop can park itself in the garage. Also just notice a lovely deep pair of scratches on the top of the passenger door. They weren't there yesterday and I haven't been out in the car today. That has really pissed me off. I've done a quick repair with some touch up paint and a Q tip so no rust can start.

3 of the bolts unscrewed easily, the furthest away one had a nut on it!........... I think some folks do these things on purpose! If I had a pound for every time that sort of thing happened, I'd be able to buy you a set of sockets that fit your odd nuts! The law of sod is strong.

The costs keep mounting. New soft top...£210. Frame (used) £60. All the gubbins to fit frame to car and hood to frame £160. Eek. Did some more carpet fitting today and mildly surprised at how well it all fits. No hot air gun needed. Spray the glue on both surfaces, wait 30 seconds and squidge it all into place. At least the passenger seat came out with no dramas!

Do you think the parts are more exy than for one of our bikes Alex? Im thinking the car is cheaper in real terms.

About on a par Jon. There are some unobtanium parts that are new. Hood frames and seats for one, as I discovered! But most stuff is out there and mainly new, very few used parts around. Maybe that's because they were built to last, back then before British Leyland moved in and destroyed the UK car industry. But my parts spending is done for now thank goodness. The next ton of dosh will go on a damn good service and that bloody handbrake. I may pay someone to fit the roof too as I have only done this once and let's just say it didn't go well. In fact I swore so much nearby dockers covered their ears. But...the carpet is DONE! I am really happy with the way it went, and the carpet is very good indeed. The space just behind the seats needs a panel made up (and the other side too) and I'll cover it with vinyl. I also found out that the rear wheels arches just had vinyl on them so I ordered some cut to fit. A tenner delivered!! Once all that is finished the seats can get nailed back in and that'll be the interior finished! Alex

So I tried fitting the vinyl to the wheel arches. It simply won't stretch enough to fit. I mullered both parts I had so ordered a roll of the stuff (for the same price as the 2 little bits I might add) and had another go. Nope. Imagine fitting LC decals to a tank but it's ten times harder. Gave up and decided to fit the seats again. Drivers side and I gave up with the seat and removed the runner and tried fitting that. Now these are MK4 seats and the hole alignments are a few mm out. Took TWO hours to get it bolted down. Then it rained. Again. I shall continue with my efforts tomorrow!

Try a hairdryer when fitting vinyl warms it up allowing a little more stretch.
