I see lots of people asking about reed blocks, replacements etc, anyway, a while back I did a test of different thickness reed petal materials on the same reed block and then compared them to a VF4 reed block which we had slightly modified The results where interesting in themselves, but we did have a reed petal failure (0.25mm thick) after just 2 runs, the other interesting result was seeing how the fuel/air ratio was affected and where So before racing headlong into buying some cheap chinese rip offs, be aware they could really screw your engine performance up, or worse still, make it run really lean and blow your engine Remember, companies don't invest money and time into developing engine components just for the fun of it, this little test alone cost me £150 in reed petal material (plus the time to make the reed petals), if you add in the cost of the VF4, that's another £225 and then the dyno time, this test and its results would probably have cost a punter £500+ to do - its never as straight forward as some people would suggest Hope it helps

That is quite interesting Dave.
Obviously big horses at work there and would also be nice to see how these modded reeds compare on a mild or standard(ish) tune as a lot of peeps will go down the simple bolt on enhancements for their motors.
The obvious reed failure on the graph did make me smile

Hi John,
Yes I'd like to do it on a stock(ish) YPVS motor etc, but its time and money amongst other things
It does demonstrate though that you can't take it as read that you can just bolt it on, my other testing of the VF4 on my old YPVS was very clear, it would be good to do a similar test again with new VF4, some chinese knock offs, X blocks and modified reed blocks with different thickness reed petal material - but that's a days work all on its own and probably £500 in components - and me shelling that out to see what the results are doesn't really make financial or business sense, different if its something I am doing as development work like the above tests.
I'd be more than happy to donate a day of dyno time if somebody wanted to donate all of the parts and labour for a day to swapping the reed blocks etc over, but me doing and funding it all, while would be interesting, wouldn't really benefit my business !
