I have a bit of play on my gear change shaft where it passes through the left hand outer crank casing. I have noticed Yamaha do a replacement seal for this but no shaft insert. Anybody know of anyone who fabricated or sells these? They seem to be bronze/brass in construction and I should imagine quite a few wear over the years.

I just used the Teflon lined one from ypvs crank cases
Drilled out then glued in

is there a member on here that does the gear shaft fix with a bush and a ring seal for that , or am i thinking of the right thing ??

Norbo sells the little bush, you`ll need to get the casing drilled out a bit for it though

ZiG Couple of ways to fix it If your engine is in bits mutts will ream the hole in the crankcase and fit a Teflon lined bush from a ypvs If it is all together the fix/bodge is the alloy insert that fits where the seal sits with an o ring to seal to the case and the oil seal goes in the end. You have to cut the plastic spacer down to suit. The original guy who made them was on here. Not sure if it was the guy that did the clear clutch covers. Was it cyberdine or something like that Member retroracersteve sells them too I think Steve

quite right Steve on the fix/bodge
its a great idea but your not really fixing the original problem.....yes its a complete engine strip and send it away to someone capable of doing it correctly but once its done its done

Retroracer Steve does them, but the original guy doing them wasn't Simon at Siberdyne - cant remember who it was but he was on here also, and was the guy I bought mine from. The "bodge" is a very good one though. I agree that the internal bush is preferable, but only worth doing if the engine is stripped already. Factor in the engineering time and cost, new gaskets etc etc, the bodge looks great value. I did consider it for my 400 as I didn't bush the cases whilst it was apart (gawd knows why I didn't ?) I thought the "bodge" may not work so well with the aircooled's circlip groove on the gear change shaft, so I bought an over long bush from Simply bearings and had that pressed into my side casing. That removed all excess movement from the shaft and it's proved leak free, with no gearshaft slop either; 20210115_135652 by dusty miller, on Flickr 20210115_135549 by dusty miller, on Flickr I also fitted a small needle roller bearing in the side case on a previous Lc build, which worked nicely, but a plain bush is good enough really Dusty

Hi Dusty.....i seen your thread someplace with the roller bearing fitted which i thought was an excellent upgrade and non intrusive to the eye so i carried this out on my own LC after i replaced the selector shaft ... such a simple thing that makes a massive improvement to the feel of the gear selection i think you should share the picture on here as regards these posts , very relevant .. Hi Zig, No problem. The bearing is an HK1214RS, drawn cup type needle bearing with 2 open ends. 12x18x14mm. It was £5.55 when I bought it plus post. I did this mod in the outer case as the hole in the case was bigger than the diameter of the gearshaft, so it needed something. A plain bush would have sufficed, but I found the bearing at Simply Bearings and ordered it. Needed to make the case hole slightly bigger for a tight fit of the bearing, but otherwise, a straightforward fix. The plain bush I have used on the 400 is perfectly fine though, and the fact it's longer than the case hole depth means added support, and there is zero flex in the shaft now. I did have the outer case reemed by a local engineer who then pressed the bush in as I wanted a really accurate job done, so it's another way to fix the issue without resorting to an engine strip. I ordered a couple of different plain bushes, but Steve, my engineering guy, chose the longest as it was the best dimensions, not only for length, but internal diameter too, plus it had the beefier cross section. This is the bearing; 36758994024_f7a76d70f6_k by dusty miller, on Flickr Dusty

i used Steves kit and it works really well. its cnc machined so is an exact fit. He also supplies the seal and correct length plastic chain guard. Deffo not a bodge, a creative solution that avoids a sh1tload of work

Did you use it on an aircooled shaft or an Lc shaft ? Interested to know regards the circlip groove on the aircooled, in relation to the seal position. Dusty

Nigel Bettis on Facebook does them.
I’ve had a few off him for various bikes.
Great fit and fix 👍👍

Nigel was who I got mine from - never fitted it on the Lc I was building at the time, but bought it as a "plan B" for the future. I was concerned on the aircooled bikes that the seal would be right over the circlip groove, But Steve (retroracer) said it worked fine on them. After I did the bush on the outer case, I didn't need to worry about fitting the "bodge" anyway Dusty
