Hi all, can anyone offer any advice on the issue I’m having with the oil pump. It’s a bit of a strange one, pump all bled ok, and I’ve fitted clear oil feed pipes from the pump to the carbs. I can see the oil in the pipes, but the left hand carb ( when sitting on the bike ) keeps getting bubbles in the pipe to a point where there is more air than oil.
I took the pipe off at the carb end and started the engine and pulled cable on pump fully and the oil bled up to the carb again, but after a while the pipe started filling with air again after a few minutes. I have no problems with the right hand carb, pipe full of oil and no air bubbles whatsoever.
I was thinking on changing over the pipes to see if the fault swaps over to see if this is a pump problem or whether there is something wrong with the carb, but other than that I’m at a bit of a loss, any help greatly appreciated 👍

I'd be getting arrow to rebuild that
If the pipe on the pump is loose the vacuum from the carb can suck air in but if it's doing it with the pipe disconnected you have bigger problems

Thanks Steve, agree, hoping arrow can shed some light on this, or book in for a rebuild, but think Arrow is really busy and there’s a waiting list, was just trying to see if there was something that I could do myself if pointed in the right direction, thanks 👍

I sent you a pm about having a chat about this. Much easier than loads of typing. I can then report back for the benefit of others.

We have spoken on the phone. Turns out that the pipes are not secured with any type of retainers.

Many thanks Arrow, just need to buy some retaining clips for the pipes, and see how I get on. Greatly appreciated, top bloke 👍

If you can’t get the sprung steel clips then use some fine gauge wire (as used on the baffle wadding) or lock wire but don’t tighten too much otherwise you’ll cut through the tube.

If you can’t get the sprung steel clips then use some fine gauge wire (as used on the baffle wadding) or lock wire but don’t tighten too much otherwise you’ll cut through the tube. Don't do this. You need the constant spring effect from purpose made retainers. Locking wire will dig into the pipe after a short time due to tiny surface area, and the pipe will not be sealed correctly. And don't use cable ties either!

Yamaha original black pipe and clips is the way to go. Still available and fairly cheap for the peace of mind.

Totally agree Shaun, and that is exactly what Arrow said as well, but I was just more confident fitting the clear pipes so I could actually see the oil going to the carbs. The engine has only just been rebuilt with new crank, Con rods, and cylinders resleeved to standard with new pistons, so I have a lot to loose if the pump isn’t working as it should. At the moment all is good and no air bubbles in the pipes, I’m keeping it off the road until I get the pipe retainers as suggested by Arrow, so I can do the running in process without the anxiety 😀👍

I actually advised the OP to use clear pipes for now, as the pump is unknown. Once it's established that all is well, then fit the black pipes. 👍

Anything JASO FC spec. or above. A lot of the lads on here are using Excol, and buy it in 25 liter containers.

Many thanks for your help with this Arrow, its great to be able to tap into wealth of knowledge that's on this forum, Im new to the LC world, always wanted one from the 80's when my mates were riding around on them, but I had a Kawasaki Z250. So its took nearly 40 years and only just managed to get one, after a long time of waiting and saving

I'll admit to having the Yambits ones on my hybrid
Easy to get on and off with the "ears"

Yes, they are good retainers. The 'problem' with the Yamaha retainers is that if your are using some of the pipe out there (clear or black) that is slightly bigger OD than the Yamaha pipe, then the gen ones might not fit all the way around the pipe. Let me find a photo of this.

Exactly that arrow
My hybrid has non standard oil spigots in the pwk's so the standard clips are no good
Just watch your knuckles and fingers with the Yambits ones, those tabs are sharp 🧐
