Cheers Mate Nice and warm in the shed today, so painted the wheel before work; 20210922_134338 by dusty miller, on Flickr And by the time I got home the shed was like an oven !! So the tape could come off; 20210922_183419 by dusty miller, on Flickr Turns out Ford Solar Gold was a pretty good match for the gold that was already on the wheel. Used a whole tin, so need another for when I do the back wheel. Wheel bearings are good, so just the discs to clean up next. Dusty

That's also known as Brembo Gold mate. I get a 400ml can occasionally from eBay. Good for doing disc inserts as well as wheels! And I'd say you've done a spiffing job there. Couple of quid...new wheel!

It was a lucky guess regards the paint to be honest. Halfrauds had a few different shades, but opted for Solar Gold and it's virtually, if not identical - handy if you miss a bit, although I did empty the whole tin on it ! There was one area where a tyre weight had been previously that had damaged the paint, hence the need to respray, and it's really freshened the wheel up. If I keep the bike it will end up with 17" 3 spokes, but if I sell it on the wheels look good as they are. Also resprayed the front wheel spacer black to freshen that too.

It's looking better all the time.
I had a GSXR1100H. All standard. The engine was great. It had five gears but most of the time only needed top. Me and the Mrs went to Corfu on it via Yugoslavia. My Mrs still says it's the best bike I ever had. I have an early R1 and a VFR800 now.
When I went to buy the R1 and test ride it the owner felt like he had to warn me about the massive amound of torque it had and told me to be careful. I guess he'd never ridden one of these. over 8,000 the R1 would beat it but anything up to that not much would touch the 1100.
It'll be fun.

Hi Alex Yea, will see what's available, speedo wise. I will need to make a bracket for the original binnacle. I did the same thing years ago when I modded my old Gixxer, but I didn't take many pics back then - it was the days before camera phones !! I used a Gsx1100Efe headlight on that bike which was huge, and I've been looking at headlight options too. Dusty All the huge efe headlamps have been stashed away by folk, when they do come up for sale, bonkers money

Thought that might be the case regards the headlight. It wasn't easy to find one 20 odd years ago, and I'm not even gonna bother this time around ! I wanted to get the front wheel back in today so I could move the bike around. Last job left was the discs, which looked pretty ropey; 20210925_093723 by dusty miller, on Flickr 20210925_093716 by dusty miller, on Flickr They cleaned up well enough, but will look better once they start getting used again. I re greased the speedo drive, and the wheel went back in. All looks better without the gold paint everywhere; 20210925_125833 by dusty miller, on Flickr 20210925_133243 by dusty miller, on Flickr A spares box turned up some headlamp brackets that just happen to be 41mm. Never looked right on my stroker builds but suit this just fine; 20210925_125848 by dusty miller, on Flickr That saved a few quid Undecided on a headlight. I think the Cyclops works ok, as this is a Streetfighter style bike; 20210925_124135 by dusty miller, on Flickr The only issue is there will be nowhere for the loom to hide away, so I may opt for an Lc style headlight. I also cut 3/4 of an inch off each end of the bars as they felt too wide. Feel much better now; 20210925_140635 by dusty miller, on Flickr The carbs had a weird stainless cover fixed over the top of them which looked odd, so that was destined for the bin; 20210912_134003 by dusty miller, on Flickr 20210925_165000 by dusty miller, on Flickr And I took the tank off today. The guy that sold the bike said he put a some fresh fuel in the tank along with the fuel that had been in there a long time ! I drained the lot, and it will get fresh petrol once all the f**kwits have stopped panic buying >:DIt will now be easier to change the plugs and tidy up the wiring and cable runs; 20210925_164923 by dusty miller, on Flickr One thing I didn't expect to find when I removed the pod filters; 20210925_164946 by dusty miller, on Flickr Foam gauze in each of the filters ? I've never seen an aftermarket headlight that I prefer, single round all the way.
If the TR stays totally naked it's either got to be frog eyes or a big single. Got a new 29l bowl, xjr400 rim (same as ypvs but chrome) and ypvs headlight stashed just in case 😉

I will probably go with an Lc headlight, so I can hide all the wiring in the bowl - I hate seeing bundles of wires all taped up, which is what this bike had, albeit tucked up under the awful instrument array. Just re routing cables correctly and tidying up wiring makes a big difference. The more I look at this bike, the more I think that some mods were done but the bike was never ridden afterwards. There is no evidence of there ever being a rear light fitted. Daytime MOT maybe ? The twin spots up front and indicators would suggest not. So not road legal without the rear light. There is no wear on the tank where the rider would sit against it and the paintwork is excellent - if you like blue metalflake !! Tank looks really clean inside and there are no repairs underneath, so that's good news. The 2 strange stainless "boxes" at the front of the frame are engine breathers; 20210925_171807 by dusty miller, on Flickr Only the right side connected up as there is only 1 breather hose out of the cam cover. Usually peeps use a small K&N style filter, but I guess someone got creative ! Plus it fills a gap in the frame It's a shame the same level of skill wasn't employed in sorting the rear frame rails, and mesh "side panels" Surprisingly strong, but look shite, that will need professional help to look better - not sure I will go that far. Next job will be to make some brackets so I can fit the Gixxer clocks to the top yoke. I'm also seriously considering finding some standard front calipers, and selling on the Billets. The brakes look too "busy" with the fancy adapter plates - why someone couldn't make plates with straight edges, I dont know . Dusty

Looking much nicer now Dusty, what's the hole spacing for the calipers? I might have some kicking about, and i have some Gsxr M discs in the garage 300mm if you need them? Andy.

Dusty, I think you’ve bolted the disks on the wrong way round, Right on left and vice versa.
They were right when you bought it.

Hi Andy, Bolt hole centres are 85mm on the caliper mounts. I think these discs are 300mm too. Cheers Jon, I hadn't even checked the discs This afternoon I made 2 brackets to mount the Gsxr clocks to the top yoke, utilizing the 2 threaded mounts on each side underneath the top yoke; 20210926_165253 by dusty miller, on Flickr They look high but with the tank back on they look about "right". Headlight will definitely be an Lc style, and sit just under the clocks. Dusty

Hi Mark Cant remember the name as I bought it ages ago - 5 litres off ebay, and it has all the nasty stuff in it that Nitromors removed. "Starchem" or something like that I think, but there are loads on ebay that will do a proper job Dusty

Post by dusty350 on Sept 28, 2021 7:29:47 GMT 1
Hi I just used a fibre cleaning disc in an angle grinder to clean up the disc faces. They will look better once they get used I think. They could have looked even better with a light skim, but they wont fit in my lathe, and I dont want the added costs, so they will do fine. I know I've already said it, but this is an exersize in improving as much as possible for as little as possible, but the bike will always be defined by the exhaust and the side rails and side panels, if you can call them that ! However, looking through ebay, there are lots of end cans that would rid the bike of the underseat exhaust system, and massively improve the look of the bike; www.ebay.co.uk/itm/131848610012?_trkparms=amclksrc%3DITM%26aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20180816085401%26meid%3D2e8de81dfcaa4424b30372677ecb1acd%26pid%3D100970%26rk%3D5%26rkt%3D13%26sd%3D144216064970%26itm%3D131848610012%26pmt%3D0%26noa%3D1%26pg%3D2380057%26brand%3DBlack+Widow+Exhausts&_trksid=p2380057.c100970.m5481&_trkparms=pageci%3Aa864fcb8-2022-11ec-9d43-ded81a272cb2%7Cparentrq%3A2b05dbd217c0a45b6782ce1cfff9eb90%7Ciid%3A1You can get stainless link pipes too, but if I did this I may be able to use some of the pipe from the underseat system for a short link. Lots to think about ! I found some old pics of my original Gsxr1100G the other day; 20210926_085913 by dusty miller, on Flickr I had this 20 odd years ago when Streetfighters were all the rage, and I ended up "fightering" it. I completely stripped it, had the frame and forks pro polished, bought a BOS pipe, Dynajet kit, fitted an H tank, rattle can sprayed all the bodywork in Yellow, fitted an Efe headlight, HEL cooler and lines, etc etc. I had forgotten how much work I had invested in it; Various photo's 146 by dusty miller, on Flickr Various photo's 147 by dusty miller, on Flickr Probably should have left it standard, but I dont really do standard !! Not sure I want that amount of work again ! Dusty

Ha, no fear of that John - just needed something to keep me occupied whilst I wait for the bubble to burst !! I still love my Yam 2 strokes the most - always will, but I do have a soft spot for the slabbie gixxers. I have joined a couple of Gixxer/Suzuki forums, mainly for info/hints/tips, but they are very different to here. I haven't touched the 400 since I got the Gsxr, but I take it up to Mutts in a couple of weeks, so that will rekindle my love for them I expect ! I'm actually struggling with this bike at the mo. Usually I strip my bikes right down, and restore every last part, polish/paint/coat/replate/replace etc etc, like many here, but this build is about a "cheap as possible" restyle which isn't as in depth as I would like. It's purely a project to keep me busy over winter, but I keep day dreaming of better shocks/wheels/paint blah blah blah I know throwing a load of money at it wont be a good idea as I wont recoup it - Gixxer streetfighters dont make the sort of money an Lc hybrid does, and it would be foolish to sell the 400 to throw cash at this, only to sell at a loss in the new year. I still think I can improve it further - I have an idea for tidying up the side rails, and the exhaust - the 2 areas that really would transform the look of the bike, so hopefully.... I think, in reality, it's a £1500 bike, so if I can achieve what I want for £400 and enjoy the process, I will be happy Dusty
