Not a stroker this time, but a "challenged" Gsxr1100 G import, registered in the UK on a C plate. Bought this at Kempton autojumble as it seemed very cheap. I was looking for another project to do over winter, and with Rd prices beyond my budget, the Gixxer will fill a gap. Now I'm not sure how far I will go with this, but I did recognise that certain areas of the bike could be improved upon without spending a small/large fortune. It's obviously been "streetfightered" by a former owner(s), and some of the work is decent, some a bit more home made, but I did feel that with minimal outlay, I could make it better. Dont think I would have any trouble making my 1100 quid back if I get bored with it - 2 stroke Yams will always be my preferred builds, and I may even flip it next spring should I lose interest. If it were mine I'd put a fibre glass GSXR1100 race seat and fairing on it, cut the stupid tailpipe just past the foot, peg and put a normal can on it, and fit a set of GSXR clocks.

A bit more of a look says possibly a Bandit engine and the carbs are probably worth around £500

Not sure if this will become an in depth, nut and bolt build, or just a tart up and flip project yet - depends on what I find and how much I love it. I bought it as it was cheap, relatively speaking, and there isn't much else about for that sorta money. Plus I do like the early Gixxers. Early investigation reveals a butchered sub frame to facilitate the 916 seat unit, a horrible instrument set up, bars that are waaay too wide, too much gold paint up front, awful twin headlights, no rear tail light ??, a badly leaking clutch slave cylinder etc . Tank looks good from what I can see, frame and swingarm are free from rash or crash damage, pipes look really good, paintwork is very good, although not my taste ! Initial thoughts are get the paint off the forks and yokes, service the forks and brakes, change lights and instruments and lessen the bar width. Definitely no fairing going on it. I prefer a low exhaust too, and may investigate what can be used with the 4 into 2 part. If I decide to go the whole hog, it will mean selling the 400 to fund it, which I'm not ready to do at the mo, so my first jobs are either cheap or cost free, the bonus being I love improving chassis parts that are cosmetically challenged ! Im sure my mate done one with the exhaust in the tail like yours but used an early R1 swingarm modified like the Dynomite R1s, looked good, i might have pics on photobucket if i can still get access i will post them up. Mark

Just seen it. It's bloody fantastic. I know what I'd do to it but it's Dusty's bike and whatever he chooses you know it's going to look great.

Cheers guys And thanks for popping the axle stands over Alex Brakes will get a clean up, and I will see if my local place will reduce the length of the current hoses - they are normally pretty good for jobs like that. Pads look good and the calipers seemed to work ok. New fluid obviously on rebuild. Seal kits are available from Harrison for not a lot of money if needed. Forks are 41mm and free from pitting, and the lowers seem to be in good condition, so I will strip the paint off and buff the lowers - paint is rattle can I think, and on the yokes too. The exhaust looks like a Micron The forks and wheels are the originals for the bike.

Interesting that the exhaust may be a Micron. Certainly stainless, and looks like I could swap out the underseat system should I decide to. And yes, standard forks and wheels, same as on my old G and H models. Bike is now up on axle stands under the frame rails, meaning I could get the front wheel out and then remove the forks today. Interesting to see that the underside of the front mudguard was totally free of road crud ? Hi Alex Yea, will see what's available, speedo wise. I will need to make a bracket for the original binnacle. I did the same thing years ago when I modded my old Gixxer, but I didn't take many pics back then - it was the days before camera phones !! I used a Gsx1100Efe headlight on that bike which was huge, and I've been looking at headlight options too. Dusty

Those clip on clutch/brake master reservoirs amuse me, They have to read over full when they have enough fluid and it must be resting on the top seal. they must seal ok or be empty as they dont look to me leaking lol.
I expect plenty of other clocks would fit this as its a simple speedo/tacho drive setup isnt it? How about some Bandit 600 ones and its single light? Thos M&P twin lights bring out the shivers in me lol

Yea, the twin lights are for the bin ! Amazing how many streetfighters had them, back in the 80's and 90's And the reservoirs would look right on angled clip ons -as standard - but look odd on non angled bars. Current thinking is to see how much of a change I can make without spending money over and above service items. Going to get fork oil today, and I'm undecided on bars - do I use what I have or do I get some 1" raised clip ons like I used on the Cafe build ? I intend to use the Gixxer instruments as I like the look of them - iconic just like Lc clocks are, imo. It's always gonna be a streetfighter type of bike, so I need to be careful to keep that theme flowing through the bike. If I were to go the whole hog, then I would be changing wheels and forks amongst other things, but at the mo, this is project "as cheap as possible" !! I always believe that small changes can make a big difference to the overall look - even fasteners can affect a bikes appearance, so I'm keen not to throw money at it (coz I haven't got it to throw !!) Hi mate, Had a few diesels over the years - 2 Gixxers, Fzr1000 Exup, Xjr1300, Fz1n. It would be an Lc or Rd sat there if I could find one for £1100, but that ain't gonna happen, and I have to have something to keep me entertained Hope you are well mate Dusty

They are great bikes for sure - I just needed something to mess around with for the long winter months. Wasn't looking for a Gixxer, but I do love the slabbies. Half faired does look good but I'm not putting a fairing on - I dont like fairings much and I dont want the expense of the parts and then paint. I'm doing this as cheaply as possible, and I think I can make a big difference with subtle changes. Forks are stripped and ready for buffing. As said, the oil looked really clean, but I bought some fresh 10w yesterday anyway. Interesting that there are progressive springs fitted too. I bought the oil in a place very local to me - Cooperized Motorcycles. Ken Cooper has a wealth of knowledge with big Suzuki's as he used to run a drag racing team. He has a dyno in the workshop so we chatted about him possible setting up the bike in the future should I go that far with it. He also mentioned Suzuki have reintroduced a lot of parts for these bikes so spares aren't a problem which is good to know. Dusty

Had an hour in my lunchbreak yesterday, so thought I would extract the speedo from it's stainless housing. I'm hoping to make a decent clock set out of the 2 speedos and tachos I have - very much a job for a long winters evening !! The speedo was fixed firmly in the housing, and at first I thought it may have been glued in, but I then realised one of the rivets may have been the culprit The dremel made a cut into the stainless shroud; 20210916_130940 by dusty miller, on Flickr I then bent the edge back, holding it in the vice, ands that broke the welds away and I could peel the shroud off, and sure enough, it was the rivet that had gone through the outer casing of the speedo and held it firm in the shroud. Both speedos have had the trip knob roughly cut off too; 20210916_131756 by dusty miller, on Flickr So it could fit easily in the new housing I guess It does mean though that the trip function could never have been reset once the clocks were fitted, and the trip meter shows 7/10ths of a Km, so I'm guessing that the work was done but the bike then didn't do any miles/km's ? The clean fork oil would back this up. Means nothing in the great scheme of things of course, but it's always interesting trying to work out what's been done and why on a new project. The clocks will be a challenge to get looking nice for sure ! Dusty

I agree, they do look great But, a lack of funds means I need to work with what I've got to keep costs low, hence working with the rough originals. The 400 is booked in with Mutts for dyno set up in October, so any spare cash has to go towards that. This is project "shoestring" !! Dusty

Paint is now off the forks and yokes. Forks are in pretty good nic with no bad gouges or damage, and the yokes are the same. Haven't gone too shiny, but they already look better without the gold paint; 20210919_191833 by dusty miller, on Flickr Changed all the fasteners for stainless from my stock, so I've only had to buy new fork oil so far. The amount of oil in each leg was approx 30ml less than it should be so I've sorted that, plus re greased the taper bearings in the headstock, and again, they look new ? I'm not a fan of gold paint on the wheels but it will stay for now. I'm going to buy a rattle can and give them a light recoating to freshen the wheels up, then clean up the discs, and then the wheel can go back in. Dusty

Bought some gold paint yesterday, so will work on the front wheel in the evenings this week. Buff up the rims, key the paint and then mask it all up. Had a quick look at the Billet calipers tonight, and found the identifying numbers - 078 and 178. This indicates they were designed to fit the Fz750 and Fzr1000, with 85mm bolt centres, according to the Harrison website. Handy to know should I need parts for them. Another thing I had a quick look at is headlight options. I offered up the cyclops headlight I briefly trialled on the Cafe racer in the early stages of that rebuild. It didn't suit that bike but it looks alright on this. Need to look at that a bit more Dusty
