It’s an iconic bike that informed a generation it’ll sell I reckon for big money. Iconic? I have a 250cc production racer owned by a Macau GP winner. Its not a copy or a triggers broom. and a whole lot better looking sans battle scares where its previous owner was scuttled at a snetters clubmans round. It's not iconic. I'm glad I'm not enthralled by the bikes of a 17yr olds dreams. There is a con in every icon...with good reason. Had it been the original bike not a replica, it would have appealed to a certain buyer, I don’t disagree that it’s madness however seeing how the market has gone it wouldn’t surprise me that it was seen as having a certain cachet. I’m also with rigga when you first read the advert it appears to imply it’s something it’s not, it is for all intents and purposes an Lc special nothing more nothing less.

It's 2 previous owners and the hybrid parts are cheaper than stock 4LO stuff. Certainly not anything high end.
Nice bike though and GLWTS.

For years weve said on here that restoring an LC back to full OEM factory fresh spec is hard and expensive. There are a lot of parts that are hard to locate in good enough condition to use on a full nut n bolt resto like that. if you choose to do a mildly modded 'back in the day' style resto you will save a bunch of cash. A full hybrid with a big bore engine and some modern suspension / wheels is then going the other way as often a lot of that kit is new and very expensive to engineer into the old LC.

Quite a bit of anger in there at those who nut and bolt restore LCs. Yep we all modded them from new, but just as he asserts that he can build his how he likes, so can anyone else. I advise anyone to do what you like, but have some respect for workmanship, no wooden blocks!
Kind of sad that he didnt do anything to the engine, makes me think this was never about really making a homage to his old bike, just a lookylikey.
And reading between the (time)lines; he built this, did the article and afterwards sold it. Cashed in on the C-19 prices (and why not I guess), but not before using it to help him sell his 900 'LC conversions', which look awful IMHO and we've talked about a lot on here before.
Call me cynical, but was this whole exercise just about selling XSR upgrade parts then?

I can totally understand Hag wanting to build a replica of his old bike, and wanting/getting a magazine feature.
What I don’t understand is putting it up for sale? I’d get it if he wanted to keep it, but as Jon says I think it’s a case of just trying to cash in on a lookie-lickie build by the owner of an iconic bike that no longer exists.
At least the 7up bike was from memory the same bike?

Muddying the waters a bit But its actually Hag selling it, not as suggested the owner who got Hag to rebuild it Didnt realise it was him selling it. The Ad reads like its 3rd party, ie like the next owner is selling it on etc. Its still pretty quick after building it, but hey its his to sell of course. Funny thought: Can you imagine having a bike like this and turning up to even something low key like a local pub event and random lads coming up to you and asking if you're Hag? lol Thats's one of the reasons we all modded bikes our way back in the day, so that they were 'your bike' and if someone bought a bike that was well known it was always still known as the original builders bike; ie "Did you see Steve's old bike the other day in town under that bus?" even if you knew Dave was the guy riding it lol I've always been surprised when people want to offer to buy my hybrids as their dream bike. I mean, theyre pretty well known as they appear on my website and forums so won't people think that person is 'me'. Weird. Why would you want people to think you're someone you're not? We all know life was different in the 80s. The mags back in the day were our only real source of info about bikes. If you went to see your mates or went to the bike shop, ie the places where bikes were talked about, everyone had seen the article you were walking about and people clamoured to tell you stuff you didnt know if you hadnt read the articles yet. No 'net back then etc. Mags, meets and word of mouth was our internet and stories like the LC Johnnys seemed a world away from my life at the time in rural Hampshire or Amsterdam, tho my life was no less 'punk' from music to my everyday ethos. lol Thinking about it, what irks me about Hag's rant in the article centers about those who he sees as slaves to originality. But, while he moans about the green passivate guys and then goes to great efforts to faithfully reproduce the old livery of his bike including the decals of businesses long since gone, including the tuning house decal fitted to an untuned bike... isnt that like an M badge on a 316L BMW? So, Im calling double standards here. He made some changes to this one over his original bike but a lot of that was due to parts supply i expect as many of the original small manufacturer parts are now long gone. Also, some of those parts he admits were not great in use. Looked great in the old mag pics and at the chippy, but horrible to ride etc. Sounds like a lot of the 80s performance bits n bobs really. Not a lot of testing went into stuff back then, but we all wanted them cos they were cool... and we'd seen them in the mags. Same with the 7Up bike I reckon and other things that shaped what we like about bikes now. uncomfy and peaky to ride, but oh-so cool! I will say that I still love the old back in the day aftermarket parts, and have them on my bikes, but wow some of it was junk lol As I mentioned elsewhere the article documents his perverse enjoyment when boasting about the fact he cut up an original 350 to build this. Like this was another fu or slap in the face for those who restore LCs. I find that frankly bizarre. Its his bike; do what ya like mate! go for ya life!! I think the whole 'LC bad boy image' has become a bit try-hard at that point. just sayin. Funny thing about LCs is that while we always say 'everyone modded theirs' and this article also suggests that as well, the reality certainly where I lived was that we didnt, we certainly couldnt do all do that stuff the magazine bike had. With the bike on hp and being a YTS or at college we just couldnt afford it. Maybe we fitted some different grips, bars and other stuff as once you crashed (we all did that of course) you needed aftermarkets etc. Lots of people did buy pipes, again crashes saw off the OEMs. But realistically very few people fitted later wheels and rear disk conversions, tuned barrels or nitrous etc. I think that is part of the reason why the bikes in the mags were such draws, they were the ones that were modded to how many of us would have liked to do ours. If you look at the pics people put up here of the bikes they had back in the day, not many had very many mods actually. Later people did mod them once they had money and real jobs and the bikes were older and more crashed, but in the early days not so much I'll wager. Hag mentions a very middle class upbringing and also seems like him and his mates were not short of cash at this time. He was one of the lucky ones I reckon. I am younger than him but my recollection of this era was one of low cash; doing odd jobs where i could for beer or petrol money, rarely both. Sure, we were teenagers so we rebelled and had many of the same cop/bike run ins and speeding stories and from what i can tell by being on here as a lot of us enjoyed a 'punk lifestyle', figuratively 'kicking back at the man' (whoever he was) I guess. The stories in the article are pretty standard really for our generation, the fact we used a bike to do em (and a lot of us had RDs as they were plentiful, cool and cheap) was just a factor of the time. Today's kids probably do the same but in less exciting cars due to insurance issues of course. Im not going to hail any single person as the one who shaped our young minds about the fact the LCs were there to be modded in any way you could. I guess if i did it would have to be from the journalists who punted the modded bikes out to us every few months in the 80s, but the fact remains that many of us still see these as a platform to build what you like and many of us put our money where our mouths are and do it, sometimes over and over again. What is interesting is that today few of us choose to modify our bikes to what we had/desired back in the day. It seems that these days most modders use more modern forks, swingers and wheels along with supercool CNC parts as we have very enthusiastic high quality engineers etc, no more sand cast or cheap welded mild steel rubbish lol. Engines are bigger and more powerful than ever thanks to the Banshee aftermarket and electronics have come a long way too so usable big power is now a reality. You only need to read the builds section of this forum to see that 99% of guys choosing to make some kind of Hybrid in the 2000s chose to look forwards rather than back in time. All of this generally means very expensive new parts are used and better bikes have resulted. Sure, if you want to go fast and handle well you need a modern 4 stroke, Hag says that too and he is right. Pretty much any modern 4 stroke will be easier to live with and out handle an 80s bike, but thats not why we do it of course. What is interesting is that once a vehicle becomes old enough to become 'a classic' people dont want modded versions, they want totally standard. This is one of the reasons LCs have gone that way. Cars are the same. I dont actually think people want them like that, instead they want to have them like they got them when new so they can mod them later how they want, but then they realise they sell better standard and so they get kept that way. I will say again tho that as usual when you mod something its for 'you'. The next owner probably doesnt want it the way you had it, another reason why your modded bike is less desirable come sale time. Anyway, all that said, I wish Hag the best with selling this bike. Its cool to read his story and while it does seem that this was a decidedly un-punk marketing exercise for his XSR parts business I guess it allowed him a bit of a trip down memory lane as well. He didnt come here and share the build or his expert knowledge of the LC itself or the LC'era with us which is a shame, but weve panned his XSRs so not his target market and I get that. Anyway, I'd better sign off and drop in my plating for some more green bolts... perhaps I'll add them to another one my hybrid builds. See, Im still a f'in Punk!

To be honest, having skimmed over the article he does come across as a bit of a bell end. The add in which he mentions himself in the third party confirms it for me.

Thank you all for your positive comments, not. What I don't understand is that when we were growing up in the 80's, the whole idea was to build the ultimate bike that gave us the highest adrenaline factor. In 1985 this was the RD350LC. By 1986 it was the YPVS. We rode the bikes that provided us with the biggest 'hit' until the next thing came along (the FZ 750 was next followed by the GSXR) and then we moved on and on until eventually the bikes became faster than we were capable of riding (i currently own an ex-Gresini Moto GP bike previously piloted by Michele Pirro which is way beyond my ability) I have had a load of hate regarding my XSR 900 project and I no doubt will also with regard to my 700/ypvs project. But the thing I think you lot are missing is... The LC was just a tool for releasing adrenaline, it wasn't some sacred God inspired image that you all seem to think it was. It was a tool to do a job. And if you can't understand that and still think that Jesus personally pissed inside the radiator of your 'All original LC'then you really are a sad c**t. I put together a replica of my 80's bike because I wanted to re-live a bit of my youth. I never tried to palm it off as the original (which is a f**ked old piece of shit now) nor tried to make it out as more than a homage to the bike I rode as a teenager. So why all the f**king hate?

Hope you got to re live a bit of your youth with that build.... I wont be trying to re live my youth.... because the holed pistons, ruined cylinders, damaged heads, knackered cranks, and the words "awww no... not again! would prove to be far too expensive now. You could pi** a few more off by getting some more built! In fact, your build is far to posh for back in the day!!..... I used any old crappy colour rattle cans that I found in my old fellas shed. A real puke inducing light yellow was one..... That would of taken out a rivet counter at 150yds.

Its your bike, build it how you want to. I do. Sometimes its a full on restoration to get to as original as possible with in many cases improved paintwork and parts from what the 1970's 0r 80's bike had, I'm currently finishing a GT750 B which in the main is a restoration but with a few added improvements in my eyes, front brake discs and Allspeed pipes to name 2, I'd have drilled the discs and fitted Allspeeds in the 80's and I really enjoy winding up the rivet counters. My next project will be a totally different rebuild, an 83 YPVS but with 480cc, K5 GSXR 600 front and rear suspension, wheels, tail unit etc, my bike my choice.

Matching numbers, 1 previous owner UK bike ! Think the big money would of been in a standard concours rebuild not a replica of something created in the 80’s,, and as JW says, sort the bloody side stand out 🙈 I'd always say an original restoration would be likley to attract a higher value (particularly on an auction site) as the base line for any prospective buyer is easily established ie it's potentially easier to identify perceived short comings etc Hybrids or specials reflect the choices/prefernces of the builder and (potentially at least) doesn't or can't identify or quantify the quality of some of the "work" that has been done although of course ANY BIKE has the potential to divide opinion THE SIDESTAND IS A STOCK LC ONE! THE BLOCK OF WOOD WAS USED BECAUSE THE PHOTOGRAPHER WANTED THE BIKE MORE UPRIGHT FOR THE PICTURE & WAS SUPPOSED TO BE PHOTOSHOPPED OUT BY THE COPY EDITOR (WHO OBVIOUSLY DIDN’T BOTHER!!

I think someone's not happy he didn't get "a substantial ammount" for it .
And as for moving ever upwards and onwards with bike progression, its a bit rich then to try to make a modern bike look like a 40 year old one.
But whatever, you've only now decided to join, so I doubt you'll stick around .

Special builds always divide opinion as always the builders interpretation
Have built and sold many hybrids and the new owner usually changes something
The olive anorak club will always wince, I've done both types and can appreciate both sides
I'm just a dinosaur that can't comprehend the money in any build these days
I'm a believer in build what you like, it's your choice
We all comment on others builds or bikes we see for sale. No malice in it, just differing opinions
I love my 31k 385 hybrid but people hate the seat. I love it 😀

It’s only tho old boys that can afford bikes nowadays. I think the Scramblers, XSR’s CB’s etc are a testament to that.
