Bought a 31k tank of off someone on here a couple of years ago. Never thought to try it on the bike , spent I don't know how long of my time lining it and painting it and it's obviously been in that hard a smack it doesn't fit the bike ! Doesn't fit at the front for some reason and panel alignment is nothing like . Well played to the fella from Oxford that sold it me . You put a certain level of trust in fellow lc people but mine has certainly gone now . I'm gutted beyond belief.

Feel for you! I am currently rubbing down a pair of “unmarked but a bit dirty” standard pipes for my LC I bought over a year ago. The l/h one is badly repaired and was then covered in chain lube and dirt to hide it. Obviously I spent days cleaning and sanding the right one first. Cash matters more than all else to some people.

In what way does it not fit?
I've had the front mount on the frame twisted or bent forward or back that causes problems but can be bent straight again
Usually if whacked that hard the front mount cup spot welds pull through and leave holes

It is not going into the front mounts far enough , I think they must be twisted and yes it was leaking at the mount on the inside of the cup before I sealed it .

I had a 31k tank that was dent free and as you say when pushed in the front cups the rear was 10mm out
Almost like it had been jigged wrong when they were spot welded on
Obviously yours has had a whack as well
I have trimmed the rubbers before too

Couldn't live with trimming the rubbers even though it's a great idea . I've set to work on my old tank that I know fits . I bet with silver soldering holes filling dents priming and paint and liner I've spent over 60 hours on this with Robert's paint scheme . Pissed off ain't the word .

The freshly powder coated LC frame that sits in my loft with all the rest of its constituent parts has been waiting for 18 years to have a tank fitted...
Life gets in the way.

To be fair, sometimes sellers are pretty cluless or just had something in the loft for years and forgot about it's history.
I just got a 31k tank bundled with a bike. Said to be fuel tight and looked fine from the outside. Once lightly blasted, it's swiss cheese!
So how do you silver solder the bugger?

Doing a 31K tank just now, had a massive dent in the top, but was/looked really clean and fresh inside. I had to braze nuts on the top and slide-hammer the dent out, still needs a big dollop of filler though.
Will see how it goes for now, although I'm fortunate to have a couple of spares kicking around, no idea what condition they are in though...

Silver soldering is like normal soft soldering as in you'll need to get the area scrupulously clean then apply some sort of flux liberally then dab away with the rod . Needs more heat than soft soldering though . Few bits on YouTube about it . The bloke that sold the tank to me said he had it on his bike for a while and it held fuel .

I bought one of those MAP P gas torches for silver soldering. Works well with the flux coated silver solder rods.

No I haven't, but reading this thread, I think I'll give it a try this week, along with my spare, as thats easy to get to as well. Main dent was in the top of the tank, like something was dropped on it raher than a big crash.
