Sorry if this has been done to death but I wanted to ask on here before I spend a day on hold to the DVLA.
Got my V5 for my bike and it is a few weeks over 40 years old.
Took the V5 and V112 (Declaration of MOT Exemption) to the Post Office
They tried to select change of Taxation Class from Bicycle to Vintage but were unable to do that and told me to call the DVLA and ask why.
The bike is currently taxed and I was expecting to change the Taxation Class and then get a refund of the tax I have already paid for.
Does anyone know why they can't change the Taxation Class?
Is it because it is only just 40 ?
Thanks in advance

Hi
Think anything registered Jan to Apr 81 will be after Apr 22 before it can have class changed to "historic"

DVLA rules state that the vehicle must be either manufactured or first registered over 40 years ago. For my XT500 I got a dating certificate from the VJMC that gave the month of manufacture. If your bike was manufactured before April then it should qualify this year.

DVLA let you apply after April if your bike became 40 yrs old before Jan 1st in same year. They allow 7 days grace in January so if your bike was first registered/manf. 40 yrs ago on Jan 9th, you potentially have to wait until April the following year to apply. (I think this is right ) For example, my LC is registered in July81 so I have to wait until April 22 to apply and I've just changed my DT to historic which was first reg'd in Jun80

From not helpful DVLA
If the vehicle was registered after the 1st April 1981, it will not be eligible for the historic tax class until 1st April 2022.

I never applied for Mot exemption as they are both Moted. I did take the Mots down to the post office and they gave them back but they did take a look. I think you have to get the vehicle changed to historic tax then apply for Mot exemption. Hope this helps.
Howard.

Slightly off topic but has anyone mot exempt a hybrid??? Can’t find really anything about restrictions for bikes but there’s some for cars. How do we stand with more modern front and rear ends??

ACCEPTABLE MODIFICATIONS THAT DON'T AFFECT EXEMPTION Different parts being used to preserve a vehicle when original type parts are no longer reasonably available Changes to axles and running gear aimed at improving efficiency, safety or environmental performance Type changes that took place during the model’s production years, or within 10 years of the end of production The Engine If the engine has been changed to one that is different from its original, this is considered a substantial change. One way of identifying this is if the number of cylinders in an engine is different from the original. However, if it is the same basic engine with alternative cubic capacities then these are not considered a substantial change.

Its used if evidence of MOT/exempt is required to tax a vehicle. Since we do tax renewal online I think the form is mostly redundant

God.....I'm so confused about all this still.😩 So my Honda CB was first registered on 31st March 1981 (obviously before 1st April 1981). Does that mean DVLA will class it as eligible for the Historic tax class this year? Have I been lucky and just snuck in by 1 day? 🤔😁

Before 1st April 1981 that's what the rules say so you will be ok.

In other words your bike needed to be registered by 31 Dec 1980. THE DVLA round up the year the bike has reached 40 years to the end of that same year and let you apply in April the following year. You can apply April next year. Next year the built before date will change to 1 January 1982. Any bike reaching 40 years next year be it any month, Jan through to Dec will qualify in April 23.

be careful with MOT exemption. Its been reported that some insurance companies have refused claims as they claim there is no proof the vehicle is in a road worthy condition. is it worth the hassle for £30
