Hi,
Is it legal to have the number plate displayed on the back of a hi-vis jacket or attached to a ruck-sack rather than being attached to the bike ? My RZV500R special is proving a bit difficult to attach a number plate to - I’ll be using it to get to track days and bike shows - so not much road use, but want to be legal-ish.
I’ve done lots of searches on construction and use and MOT test advice but still not sure - does anyone have any experience of this please ?
Cheers Paul

All I can think of is that it wouldn’t be lit.

I'm pretty sure it's got to be attached to the bike. For the example of putting it on a jacket, when you take it for an MOT you would have to be sitting on it all the time, which would make it kind of difficult for the tester.

The vehicle must display the number and it needs to be lit, from memory of the road traffic act and construction and use. This is also guidance www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2001/561/pdfs/uksi_20010561_en.pdfThe problem is you’ll get pullled all the time if you don’t at the very least you’ll get a vdrs (vehicle defect rectification notice) they will I guarantee run background checks on the vrm to the vin, etc etc I used to get pulled for having a drz400e on daylight mot and I was in the job at the time. Oh and yellow backed rats generally don’t understand the word discretion.

Construction and use regulations state a vehicle number plate must be affixed to the vehicle where it can be easily seen and read, I'd be inclined to make up some form of removable mounting plate. It will save you an awful lot of aggro at the very least.

It has to attached to the bike and visible from the rear. Doesn't need to be lit if the bike is daytime use only with no running lights fitted.

I would of thought it was obvious, unless the person is a vehicle and has a V5 for themselves. Ohh... there's the loophole! I can now legally call myself a "she" or a "her" and still have a c**k and two bollox,(and possibly use the ladies toilets.. well until folks get fed up of being perved in public lavatories...oh sorry... that's the normal place for it nowadays) so therefore identify oneself as a "vehicle".

Henry Cole seems to get away with it ! I have noticed that too but he's is a 'trade plate' I believe so maybe there are exemptions on placement for those?? Often car dealers just bung them on the rear window for example.

Fine to "research the regulations" but I still got fined on my car even though it was "legal" but do you really have the time and money to argue the case...

Surely you can. Take it a bit further even. Lamp on helmet to save on headlamp. Arms for indicators. Left and right. Fuel in your back pod to save on the tank. Duck quack whistle attached to helmet instead of horn. Segs for brakes. VIN tattooed on your shoulder. Yamaha on your forehead. The options are endless.

Thanks for the advice everyone - I’m thinking that even if I can argue the legality it is probably not going to be worth the aggravation - I’ll try making up another number plate bracket - Mark 2 😄 - another day gone cutting and filing metal 🙄
The bike is daylight only - no indicators , mirrors or lights - perhaps no number plate was pushing my luck a bit - it’s got a speedo in the tacho display and a ahem light weight warning horn

Thanks for the mention, its really appreciated. Number plates do need to be fixed to the vehicle and need to a certain size to also be road legal. The letters, spacings margins and legal info all need to be complied with. If anyone have any questions we are more than happy to help and provide the smallest legal sizes to accommodate your reg number. The less characters you have the smaller you can go. Likewise the more 1's or I's you have the reg, the smaller you can go as they're narrower. Any questions, feel free to message us - we will visit this forum every now at then but for a quicker response you're best to contact us using the contact form on our website at:- www.jdmplates.co.ukMany thanks, Carl.

Unfortunately, where the space is displayed on the paperwork informs where the next row should start when a number plate is used for motorcycle. DVLA have some weird requirements! Cheers, Carl.

I'm a tad confused with the smaller number plate being legal. Surely they have to be a uniform size to be legit? Saying that, all my bikes have had small plates! Alex

Alex The characters have to be a minimum size, there is a minimum spacing allowed between them and they have to have a certain width border. So the less characters the smaller it can be.

It's a joke really, there are dozens of cars and bikes getting nicked every day, burglaries, street robberies, stabbings, etc, but the police have got enough spare manpower to hang around bike meets with a tape measure checking that the letters on your number plate are correctly spaced out.

I'm a tad confused with the smaller number plate being legal. Surely they have to be a uniform size to be legit? Saying that, all my bikes have had small plates! Alex As Tonyd stated above, its all to do with the size of the characters and spacings between them. They need to be readable from a set distance so a 'standardised' size was set for both cars and bikes. Bikes and imported cars can have smaller sized letters; 64mm high x 44mm wide whereas UK spec cars should have 50mm wide x 79mm high letters. The spacings need to be complied with so the letters can clearly be distinguished between one another. on a 7x5, 8x6 and other 'smaller bike plates' these letter sizes cannot physically fit onto the plate whilst being the legal size with the required spacings. However, if you have less digits in your reg or have quite alot of 1's in the reg; the plate can be significantly smaller than the standard 9x7 whilst still being fully legal which is what we can offer! Cheers, Carl.
