blaine The stamping of the stars/asterisks is also not right. There are no dimples at the end of the stars. Jon It's what I have tried to say with my poor English: And the stars should have a point on each side of the horizontal branch Xavier I think we must of been typing at the same time, and you pipped me to the post? Just went back and noticed something about the number
You can see traces of the original Yamaha stamp
Above the 0 in 4l0 you can see a 0
Above the 7 there is a trace of a number and above the 6 you can see the remnants of the end star with the point at the end of the horizontal stroke

Now highly likely a stolen recovered where DVLA or whoever it was back in the day restamped it making an arse of it with an extra digit
The second number will be a reference number for their records
I take it the v5 shows the 4l0 number?
Does it have the extra digit or not?

Very true, let sleeping dogs lie
Was speaking to my parts guy earlier and we were discussing this second number
He was saying it was quite common but was very regional
Police/dvla would restamp frames when stolen/recovered and add crime reference numbers

Thank you to everyone for their inpu t and knowledge, Xaviers picture makes clear all that is wrong with the stamping and your comments support this. As said I'll take the frame to the police at some point and await their verdict. It is probable that the frame may be hookey, however until they look for prior numbers/ regrind etc there is always the slim chance that its a blank frame stamped up. Many moons ago (30 plus years ago). I bought a new MTX125 frame from Honda that had to be restamped after being rebuilt and inspected by DVLA. P.S. Did yamaha do the same with regards to new frames(no VIN?) My very first lc (UGY484X) I bought from my friends uncle as a “rebuilt” bike had a brand new frame from Yamaha and did not have any numbers on it so I was told. Did I check? No, I didn’t care back then and it was on mates rates. It was stolen from me a few months later (some sort of karma when I think back now) and I bought the one I still have now.
