Hi friends, Just picked up a 1983 Rz250r 29L (I think similar to '83 RZ350 31k) and learning a lot thanks to this forum. The bike had a running engine in Feb last yr however it took 8 months to get to me due to COVID. By this time it had taken hit due to rains and other factors. The bike does not start now; it did once or twice but stalled soon enough. I am told that the stock stator or the aftermarket cdi could be the culprit. Got the stator and rotor checked and they seem to be good enough. So I am thinking of investing on a original cdi and loom off ebay. Should I stick to a 29L cdi (prone to fail) or move to the reliable 52Y? I read the below from other posts: "To use an 85(52Y- 50) CDI on an 83-84 31K system you must exchange the colors red and green and put additionally the black-and-white cable of the wiring harness also to the black-yellow cable of the CDI. A second possibility is again to also put the black-and-white cable to the red cable to the CDI. If the black-and-white cable remains free, one cannot turn the engine off"Need help on the two questions before I put my money into it. 1. Would 52Y be compatible with my 29L model? 2. Will this wiring loom work maybe with some tinkering? www.ebay.com/itm/Yamaha-RZ350-Wiring-Harness-1984-85-NEW-FREE-SHIPPING/123783178334Thx

Hi. Just my experience but with a 40 year old 4lo. I was having no end of misfiring/running issues with the standard old system. Got frustrated and bought a Power Dynamo/Vape system and itβs so much better. So just saying maybe think of a modern system ππ»

Thanks. Agree, I have a vape kit on my aircooled RD. For now, I dont want to go for a zeel or igni cdi kit. Just need to put an appropriate good cdi and get going.

Highly likely fecked cdi although if it's been lying strip and clean the carbs
If you have stripped them check the float bowls are on the right carbs
If they are wrong it won't start but will misfire and rerun for a second every now and then
If you don't want to go zeel or Iggy I'd be tempted to pick up an F2 1ua rotor, stator and cdi
Get rid of the old mismatched stuff as the newer stuff is more reliable. Did it on my last build
That way you only have the 1 4 way plug to graft onto the loom with the black, orange, black/white, black/yellow
(Earth, coil feed, kill sw, pv control signal)

yes mate, and definitely nothing better than going for the modern and more dependable stuff. But its difficult to source these parts here in India and improting gets extremely expensive affair plus the customs:(. Hence I hence decide to try my chance with a 52Y CDI first. So if I get answers to below, would be highly appreciated. 1. Would 52Y be compatible with my 29L model? 2. Will this wiring loom work maybe with some tinkering? www.ebay.com/itm/Yamaha-RZ350-Wiring-Harness-1984-85-NEW-FREE-SHIPPING/123783178334

Unlikely to work well as for a USA model
You can expect it to have different wiring for switchgear due to lights on all the time, no side light and maybe even catalyst sensor and warning light wiring

Thanks, have used it before. Proved to be very expensive for me as we have 42% customs duty.

Some guy on the Fb forums was hawking a small conversion loom for running a 52Y-50 on the earlier bikes if you didnt want to make your own one up. maybe get that and the 52Y-50 or ignore that and go straight to a Zeel?
I fitted a 52Y-50 to my 83 Im restoring using the info you provided and it wasnt hard.

Is it not just a case of reversing the red/green on the stator and the black white kill switch connects direct to the red cdi wire
Is it not all on Norbo's website

Yes it's on the info page I wouldn't be connecting the black/white to the black/yellow As it says the 52y50 has 1 less wire so nothing to connect the black/white to if using it on an lc2 The f1 kill switch wire is red/white and simply connects to the red cdi wire The kill switch wire simply earthed the stator coil so stops it powering the cdi Steve

I've been half offered a 52Y cdi to try out on my 31k LC2 which has a duff 29K-50 cdi, but my cdi has 9 wires/3 plugs but the 52Y only has 8 wires, and as I don't want to modify the borrowed cdi was just trying to work out if its possible to try it on my bike?

You can just leave the black/white wire disconnected and stall the bike to stop it I have a 29k50 cdi with no plugs you can try It is unknown as in I had one that ran for so long then would start misfiring. I fitted another and it seemed fine and I sold the bike on He still had probs so I got him a 3rd one but then I think the stator was duff I cut wires off both to use with Ignitechs and I don't know which one I have but both allowed the bike to start I can send it to you if you are stuck Steve

That little conversion loom could be useful for testing. I guess it's not hard to make it up.
Any idea what FB forum it was? I did some searching and found nothing.
