Seen loads of RD and LC generator block connectors melted , my LC last year was on its way out and I've just stripped my hybrid and that's the same, I would never have noticed until it was too late but luckily I was taking the engine out when I spotted it. What's the common reason for this ?

Getting too hot I would think.😁
Seriously tho, I haven't had an issue with mine. Bought a load of random Spares years ago and there was a couple in there that weren't melted either and wasn't aware there was an issue. Will keep an eye on this post to find out more.

A poor connection causing a high resistance making the temperature rise in the connector.

Dirty or loose connections will do it
I'd also say a knackered old battery drawing too much power won't help

I'll replace the block connector and probably the battery but can't see me getting it done now until next year , not been feeling it this year .

Interesting people are saying battery and not worried about the regulator/rectifier...

Is this one of the four blocks that lives under the front of seat we are talking about? I replaced one of those the other year, Yam bits sell the connector if you are looking for one.

Yes it's that one, it doesn't really need to be a standard fitting, in fact I think mine was swapped when I had ignitech fitted last year , going to swap the reg/rectifier too while it's in bits.
