Hi guys, Just filling in a Peter James insurance form and it’s asked for a valuation, and to be honest I’ve not really got a true idea of what I should put down. Anyone got an idea? It’s a 1981 Rd350lc original owner 21500 miles completely rebuilt , Pretty standard apart from the R1 Brakes and Expansion Chambers . Matching numbers . A1 condition (IMO) 😉 Cheers Bodger.

Speak to Norbo he does official valuations and only charges a small amount. I did mine initially they rejected it but ran with his saves the hassle

With Peter James if you state a value less than £10,000 you can declare it yourself and just send them 2 recent pics. Over £10k needs an independent valuation.

Sounds about right, but try for say £9k and if they knock it back then agree at £8k but I think they will just accept yr value.

Do insurance company's actually pay the agreed value or just get an assessor to give you book value if its stolen or written off?

You are better of with an agreed value
If, and hopefully not, it meets a terminal issue then you get paid out what you have agreed to with the insurance company
If the bottom falls out of the market, then you will get market price at that time
Our 2 classic bikes are both agreed value

I know £8K sounds a lot, but when you think about the money that either you or the previous owner has put into it, its probably not far off for you to replace like for like.

One thing I didn’t know though
You don’t accumulate any no claims bonus on classic bikes

One thing I didn’t know though You don’t accumulate any no claims bonus on classic bikes Yes its been like that in the UK for 30+ years, for some reason classic car and bike policies never attract bonus. However.... if you later buy a modern bike and need NCB ask them for a letter stating how long you were insured and the fact you didnt make any claims. That date range and stated zero claim should be enough to net you NCB with a major insurer

Thx Bodger.
I have BT45's on my 'work in progress' LC and they look a bit erm lethal especially as I'm going to 400cc & 28mm Carb's.

I had a 120/90 on the rear back in the day , but had to put the rear brake plate stay on the other way around , which I had to do for the 110/90. In the 80’s I believe some production racers even shoe horned a 130/90 in but god knows how they did that.

In the 80’s I believe some production racers even shoe horned a 130/90 in but god knows how they did that. Used to use a 130 front and back production racing, dunlop KR something front and Mich rear TK ? race tyres if I remember correctly. Handling was awful but gave the grip needed for racing. Weaved all over the place. I would think modern tyres in narrower sizes , like 110 rear and 100 front, would give just as much grip as the 80`s tyre and not mess up the handling. The LC I raced with 130 tyres was bought to replace my original bike that had been nicked and came with the 130`s on. Being completely ignorant of bike set up at 19 I had raced my first LC with hard compound road metzlers. It used to slide a lot and it puzzled me how quick others could get off the corners.

I've just done this with Devitts and said £7500 agreed value. Apparently they get an assessor to look at your pics and if they think it's too low they'll bump it up. Starting to think I should have gone higher. Still waiting to see what comes back. flic.kr/p/2jgFCUdflic.kr/p/2jgJwMRDon't think these links are working and can't seem to get pics uploaded from flickr.

I asked on the help and advice forum. When I looked at my flickr account the privacy settings were blocking some viewing and sharing settings.

I asked the lady at Devitts how they worked out value and she said she wasn't certain so I looked at what they were going for in dealers (as in full replacement value).
If you look at what you'd pay trade I don't think it's far off, what with some of the ridiculous prices dealers are asking for UK matching numbers 4L0s.

I recently renewed my policy with Peter James. The bike is a 4LO matching numbers UK bike, 1982, Candy Blue, bog standard but occasionally fitted with short can Allspeeds. Just agreed a revised valuation with them of £6.5k.
