Hi All I am trying to adapt a pair of 1A3 carbs to suit my RD400F
So far I have done the balls out mod and cleaned the orifices then tapped and put the a stainless grub screw in I have the 2.5 carb slide and ordered the correct emulsion tubes with the spray shield rather the bleed type also ordered the 145 mains from Steve at moto carb. But when I have looked at the needles they are Y5s which I believe are for 250E/F (I may be wrong ) I also had lying around a 5I4 needle which again I think is a early RD350 so I am struggling for needles 5J6s Which are like hens teeth as anyone used the ones from yambits and if so are they any good, secondly what everyone else using in their 400 E/Fs
cheers
Al

yeah, I've only got 2 left and unless Nigel doesn't want them, then I am out of them
the needle you need is a Y246, I can probably get some more if required, these are the bast available replacements that match as closely as possible the 5J6 needle
If your running the 1A3 carbs, why not run with the 5L1 needle and the 184-02 (I think) needle jet, then jet accordingly to get the fuelling right, they will work fine on the 400F, they don't have to have the same internals as the for the 400E/F to work, they just need fuelling correctly

Or just use a set of 31k carbs...got to be the most flexible configuration out their in terms of original carbs. Just took yamaha a decade to realise what was needed !

I think there is some confusion Pete they are 1A3 carbs that I am adapting see previous post it was Dave (muttsnutts ) who suggested getting 5L1 jets so that’s what I have done 2R9s are on my wish list apologies for the confusion 👍👍

Understand, so if you use 1A3s don’t forget you need to blank off the balance pipe in the 400F reed block rubbers . Unless you already have the other type.

Because the 1A3 carbs are jetted to work with C/D inlet rubbers...if you use E/F inlet rubbers with the ballance pipe the jetting will be all wrong.
In summary. You can use 1A3 carbs on an E/F engine but you need to make all other related things the same high means us C/D inlet rubbers.
