Had a problem setting up a clutch recently so thought I'd buy a gen Yamaha cable to see if that helped. Long story short, it made matters worse, in fact I couldn't set it up at all with the new cable. When I compared to the one fitted, i noticed that this new one is about 6-7mm longer. I've no idea if the one fitted is a genuine one or not as came with the bike. Has anyone got a stock cable laying around and happy to measure the free cable length as below? This new gen Yam one is around 132mm from end of sheath to end of nipple when fully extended. The one fitted to the bike is around 125-126mm. I've put the old one back on and have managed to get a decent set up. Strange! Thanks.

Is your ball missing or the wrong size???

My girlfriend says they are both perfect thanks. Her sister agrees! ha ha
I didn't remove the clutch push rod to check the ball, but as the engine was rebuilt by top engine man, I'm sure its fine in that respect. I know what your saying and could be a possibility that I may still have to check.
I now seem to have been able to set up the clutch fine with the original shorter cable (may or may not be a gen one?), but I have some doubts about the so called new genuine one.
I struggled to get reasonable tension with it even when connecting the cable to the hand lever and the removed side casing/internal lever assembly with the so called genuine cable, hence my question relating to cable length. My experience is that when its connected up it pulls up on the internal lever and spring, but this was saggy!
I'm hoping someone can check cable length to set my mind at rest. Thanks.

This is a big problem now
The 29l clutch cable is long NLA but the occasional NOS one turns up so no option of buying from a dealer
The last 2 I've bought are questionable
The first was from Japan and was in a Genuine bag but the cable does not have the black Teflon sleeve on the inner cable
The second has the sleeve but it looks slightly different at the spring outer
Both are marked on the outer as per the genuine cable

Out cable sleeve is marked with the full 4L0 part number. Looks the part. If the copiers go to all that trouble, why can't they get the cable and sleeve lengths correct?

Now I’ve read this Thread I’m fairly sure I was sold a copy 4lo throttle cable supposedly being genuine too also in a gen bag with labels and correct markings. I still couldn’t get the oil pump set as it should and so I mentioned it to the seller but got fobbed off with” I’ve had no other complaints and sold loads “ so I’m£100 down and will be having to spend another with Fowler’s!!☹️Unless norbo gets some made . I have asked on here just like you have what the correct length of free cable at carb’s and oil pump should be but nobody seemed interested as I have a cable manufacturer here in Ellesmere Port who will make some for us at a very reasonable cost too. So if anyone has one to measure it would be great to hear from you . He could also make the clutch ones too ? Anyone ? Cheers Pete😀

LC Kev(redbimota here I think?) sells used but mint SH genuine cables, bought and fitted a clutch cable I got from him at the stafford show a few weeks back, he charged £5 for them.
Maybe worth a PM..
