I know what your trying to say, and agree in part but we don’t know the circumstances; and I suspect a certain amount of sarcasm/tongue in cheek humour?
You can be inches from life or death in many ways.
If he says the autopilot saved them, then you have to take his word for it.
Last year a truck turned right, right in front on me on my LC. I’ve still no idea how I managed to avoid a crash. Riding ability plus sheer luck in equal measures for sure (I’d like to think?).
I ride my LC for pleasure and so greatly reduce the risk as I do it infrequently. However I’d envy modern technology which saves my life in day to day driving in a car to enable me to have my little pleasures on a bike now and again.

The day control of a vehicle is taken away from me is going to be the last day I drive one! Tech is unreliable... my less than 10k Vivaro has recently died due to an unfathomable electronic problem... The flip side of all these driver "aids" is that they actively encourage users to rely on them. Rely on NO. Use as an assist YES. But it is never that simple. Take auto lighting on cars... the drivers with this don't even think to turn them on in fog.. Suppose a "fog" sensor is needed as there is no ability available on the drivers part to do this basic function! It is the time of the millennial.. and they're welcome to it.

I agree with you Steve to an extent, but Im also going to be glad when those who hate or cant drive are being driven by a computer. There are too many terrible drivers on the roads, removing them would make it safer, even if the tech isnt perfect.
The world will look back in 50 years and be appalled that we even allowed humans to be in control of cars in the same way we look back at the dangers of working in the industrial revolution etc.
Driving is a skill. not every body can do every thing well. some are awful at it. Im with Jon, my 'skills' (or training lol) have save me on the roads many a time.
One of the issues I have with modern tech is that so often it is buggy and thats 'accepted'. If my accident avoidance software has an issue that I dont know about, even if it only needed a reboot, while im on a journey it could kill. And lets not get started on the idea of viruses in cars.... Hackers or terrorists could disable all cars of a model or brand, driving or static etc. Chaos!

Think the real meaning in what happened may have been lost by the "autopilot" headline.
Most modern cars have what is commonly called "collision avoidance " braking now, obstacles are picked up by the cars radar & camera...some you can switch it off, some you can't. 100% for young , inexperienced , poor/tired or less than focused drivers, it could make the difference between them hitting something (you!) or not.
The camera would be focused on the road ahead so wouldn't have picked up the falling tree until it was in its line of sight.
I would suggest that is then what triggered the car to brake, not solely an autopilot function, chances are it did it before the driver noticed noticed.

My lad is 16, he has been driving since he was 11 hopefully giving him a head start with driving ability when he gets his 1st car I'd recommend it to anyone with kids.. amazing how quick they pick it up. And a dam sight better at reversing than the attempts in Morrisons car park that I regularly witness. (It's good entertainment and free!) One's focus should be 360 degrees all the time... those that focus on the car bumper infront of them are a gnats whisker from the meat wagon! The thing that saved the tesla driver was his airbag.. a great piece of safety kit.

Sounds like the idiot in America who failed to remove himself from the gene pool. Bought a Winnebago and on the highway set the cruise control and walked into the kitchen to make a coffee...and natch, he crashed. Amazingly he sued Winnebago and won and got a brand new vehicle. Alex ps planes can take off and land automatically but would you board one with no pilot? No. So why would you use a car with no driver? And self drive cars were inveted years ago, they're called taxis
