I picked this thing up a year or so ago. Finally go around to stripping it this winter. I did clean the carbs and rode it around the block in the summer. Was clearly tired and needs a clutch, but is in decent shape overall. It seemed like a really good base for a restoration. I have original headlight ears in a box. Just need to sort out horns. Funnily I sold three horn brackets last year when I picked this thing up in a load of parts. Forgot to keep one... I got to about this point when I realized there was something wrong... Frame is bent Pretty pissed as you can imagine. Matching numbers bike. Everything looked great... then this. I have a message in to imageworks for a mars bar kit and going to go ahead with the build. Hopefully I can pick up a frame locally. Funnily there are a couple frames in the US that have been offered to me by some considerate forum members, but the shipping and customs make it a bit too much trouble/expense.

I am looking around. I have heard there may be a place about 3 hours away, however it could prove to be considerably more expensive to fix vs getting a new frame.

I know different people have different / limited skill's but if it's just the cradle with a bend in I would straighten it my self ,or get it straightened !! Just my opinion ,,

Both sides of the frame were hit, so I do worry about what kind of impact the front of the bike sustained.
Was a little unexpected as MOST of the bike is very original and in remarkable shape.

Is it possible to cut those front sections out and re-weld in a replacement from those frames that have been offered. It would be able to stay as a 'matching numbers' bike if that matters.

I would definitely get the frame repaired. Even if it means sending it off somewhere further afield it will probably cost no more than a replacement frame with docs if you can find one. Always taking a bit of a gamble with a used frame of unknown history so by getting your own repaired and checked over, you will at least have the comfort knowing it is true and you still have the magic matching numbers 😉 John

Hi Nokturnal,
I don't know where you are based but, I had a frame straightened by the guys who make 'ABBA' stands, they are in Essex or there is 'Maidstome motoliner' in Kent. Should be cheaper than sourcing and buying another frame?

Overdue update time. Since my last post I have been concentrating more on my TZ with what little bike time I have, so things have been slow. We have had another baby which has thrown a wrench into progress as well… Got the frame/swinger straightened at CMR racing, which has since changed its name to Cox Custom Fabrication. The frame may have already been straightened (just not cosmetics) as it was well under spec, that or it was knocked straight. The swinger was way out so needed attention. All good now. It has sat like this for almost a year I think. New frame and body paint. New swinger bushes. Steering bearings. Just getting started on assembly. Refurbishing black plastic parts as I go… now dealing with a disintegrated fuse box. Running in to lots of little small road blocks I made a mental note of on disassembly, but have long since forgot…

If you rotate the fork tube in the leg does the gap move, as forks age they naturally get a slight bend on them due to braking forces etc in use, I've had this before with old bikes and thin fork tubes. Line them both up by rotating the tube in the leg, you can usually find the sweet spot.

Weird… my post appeared to be doubled. When I deleted the double post both are gone…. To recap triples not lining up. Lol Thanks for the suggestion. Will give it a go. They do need to be twisted around to persuade into place.

I believe LB recently had something similar to this with one of his LCs, he bought new triples as the lower was bent.

It could well be the fork thats bent, its the weakest part, but without a couple of spare fork legs in that size its going to be hard to tell if its the leg or the triple.
To be honest I was surprised when he told me his was bent, its a pretty solid bit of cast steel :/

The only thing that has me thinking is the fact I know the bike’s taken a good whack…
Forks are from a different bike and have measured straight.
Found a spare triple, don’t have spare tubes tho. We will see. I’ll be thinking about it forever if I don’t try it!

Well… thanks Jon. It was bent I guess. Put bearings on the other (less pretty ☹️) lower triple and the forks slid in almost easy…
Always seems to be easier to get it into the ugly ones.
