Hi everyone, I have just started stripping down my 4lo motor. It was an unknown quantity when I bought the bike last year but in order to stand a chance of getting it on the road this year a start has to be made. First observation is that the crank is completely donald ducked, hideous side play on the rods. Cylinders are of different sizes 1 is +25 and 1 is +50 hopefully they can be sorted. My main question at this time is having taken the clutch basket off there seems to be a lot of end play on the input shaft. Is this something I need to be worried about? I’m sure the answer is on here somewhere but spending more time on the forum than spannering at the moment😂

When you say "end play" do you mean up and down or in/out??
I have seen quite a few engines with up/down play behind the clutch on the input shaft. It appears the double row bearings wear but is not easily checked when the bearing is out on it's own.
I have had some uprated bearings for this purpose made if anyone wants one. They have 2 rows of 14 balls instead of 2 rows of 9.

There will be in and out when the basket is removed
The shaft is pulled against the bearing by the clutch centre nut
The bearing is basically sandwiched between the gear shaft and the basket

Hi Steve, thanks for the reply, I was initially concerned because there was a lot of play on the clutch basket which didn’t seem right. One of the thrust washers was missing on the inside of the basket when I dismantled the clutch, but I am talking about 5mm of end play which seems extremely excessive to me. With the issues with the rest of the motor it might be time for a rethink.

you can re-shim the gearbox to remove the in/out play (well bring it back in spec anyway), I keep the shims on the shelf and all of the bearings too if you need anything

Thanks Steve, I will know more when the cases are apart. At the moment I think the bearing fitted to the case is the wrong one.
