Asking this question for a mate he’s about to order a new car but is not sure which way to go ,He looked at a 2.0 diesel the tax was £465 compared to £145 for petrol,he’s a tight git and wants a diesel for the mpg but is put off by all the rumours about diesels being banned ,anyone got the lowdown?

They will probably both be banned by 2040...
He will probably need to work out cost difference based on real world mpg figures and current fuel costs for each fuel, plus yearly tax costs.

Depends how much mileage he does and what the real world mpg is
The wife's petrol clio does 40mpg
My diesel mondeo does 44mpg at best (ford don't give that figure)
My diesel superb was 52mpg minimum
Also does he do more miles in a year than the service interval?
The reason behind that is a lot of diesels have a lower mileage between services so if you don't do that mileage the servicing is annual.
If you do more then you end up servicing twice a year
Not so bad now but I've had a few diesels that were 10 -15k between services where the petrol was 20k+
I'd always said I'd go diesel as I like the bottom end grunt but the modern turbo patrols are about as good
Also long term you have a dpf and egr valve
Don't forget the added cost of adblue

Wife drives a 3lt diesel good strong motor loads of grunt and relatively economical it does 38 mpg I drive golf gti 2.0 the economy is pretty poor at 30 mpg but it’s a great motor. I think it really comes down to personal preference. Rob is that a true emissions or a vag emissions test? 😁

One got a Golf GTD and average 50/55 but can get 64 on a run especially round the M25. Also as it’s stop start 20 pounds per annum road tax.

I've got one of those 1 litre 3 pot turbo petrols. Surprisingly powerful and 50+ mpg. £20 tax, and piss easy to home service.
Not as nice as my old diesel Jag, but now I've retired I just don't do the mileage to justify a big car.

Personally I prefer petrol engines over diesel any day, I'm probably biased because that's what I grew up with, I've worked on them far more too,....I know that any combustion engine is 'bad for the environment' but I've always thought that diesel were far worse, so why they pushed the sale of them years ago is beyond me.
I know that these particulate filters can clog up/cause problems on diesels if you mainly use the vehicle for short trips, maybe this should be something else he should consider??

Thats Landrover living in the past as usual, no wonder they are shitting themselves and cutting production. Whilst most brands have been looking into new engines and power sources landrover having been installing transit puma engines into there 'high end products' then blame it all on brexit and move production to India and China. The way they haven't been able to introduce the new defender for 3 years says it all,I used to love Landrovers and owned a few ,now they are becoming a f**king joke.

they are actually moving some production to Slovakia although they do have a factory in china sales there have slumped. they are actually running flatout on the new evoque in Liverpool with loads of diesel sales.
I bought a gtd golf pushing 55mpg and 30 quid tax serviced every 15k so that's once a year for me probably more expensive than a petrol but im not arsed as I really went for a balance of performance and economy

I retired last year after having 20+ yrs of driving & now much preferring automatic diesels which happened due to the company having a diesel only policy. I probably won't do more than 8k a year now so after the extra purchase & fuel cost (45p a gallon the ba5tards !!!) , a diesel just doesn't make financial sense in my situation. The other big factor is the residual values have already started and will continue (IMO) to tumble as government laws/restrictions against diesel & buyer trends change towards petrol.

After seeing people with DPF issues and knowing that if you do low mile commutes that can be worse, I would suggest petrol would be the way, even without all this anti-diesel legislation around at the mo. Its a shame, Ive had some great diesels over the years; BMWs 3.0 liter turbo six was torquey as hell etc, but deep down I'd always pick a petrol car anyway, all those years of two strokes mean I like engines that rev

You hit the nail on the head there. Residuals are not going to be good on diesels now, they are dead in the water, like it or not.

If you do short trips all the time, the diesel is a no no, the dpf and egr will clog up, both can be cleaned though by doing a manual burn for the dpf and removing the egr pulling it apart and clearing out the gunk
Diesels like long uninterrupted journies where they get up to operating temperature and stay there, with the advent of adblue emissions have dropped
Me I have diesel due to the kms I do

Just ordered another Qashqai for the wife, petrol 1.3 Turbo, only do local drives to work, with about 3 trip's to Cornwall a year, less than 10k total, really didn't see diesel being an option, having a long run every few months will not do it any good, having said that, new one comes with a particulate filter, but I believe the petrol versions do not suffer like the diesel with clogging due to the difference in heat generated.
