Are there any obvious visible distinguishing marks between the c/d gearboxes and the f.I have been offered one from a chap who was given it with the purchase of the rd400f model, but is not even sure himself if it is the F gearbox. As I am looking for the F gearbox I want to be sure before I buy it that it is the correct one. Cheers Phil

Hi The F model is an E engine. The F was badged by Yamaha to move the stock they had to make way for the Lc's, so they gave the E a makeover with dogleg levers and red wheels to make it an F. I cant remember now if there were any differences between an E gearbox and C/D versions. I did a 400e engine rebuild a few years back and these are the only gearbox pics I have, but it may help; Engine build 008 by dusty miller, on Flickr Engine build 007 by dusty miller, on Flickr Engine build 005 by dusty miller, on Flickr DSC01615 by dusty miller, on Flickr If you can find a fiche for an E and a C/D you could cross reference part numbers. And I'm sure someone here would know, or ask on the aircooled forum for you if you aren't already on there Hth Dusty

gear clusters the same primary gears are different Not sure about that.... I was looking at this the other day, comparing parts and parts lists. Most obvious difference is the kickstart drive on the clutch side end of the output shaft. 5th and 6th gear pinions are also different. of course alot is common with earlier models so C/D clusters can be made to fit and would also be good source of donor parts.
