Hi, Im needing to top up the gearbox oil on my 81' 350LC,but my local dealer has given me Motul 2T 710 synthetic which I assume is for the pre-mix/oil pump tank? Should I have asked for a transoil & if so what the best stuff to use? Many thanks.

Find a new dealer.
Use a light gear oil to GL4 spec. GL4 is wet clutch safe. Motul supply a light gear oil.

The Haynes manual says 10W/30 motor oil, Stan Stevens uses 10W/40 motor oil, other folk use a modern day 'transoil',...which one is best? No idea.

While others use ATF. Personally I use 4 stroke 10w/40 motorcycle engine oil.

I've tried them all. A light gear oil works best of all.

Lots of previous threads. FWIW I used Elf Moto Gear Oiil 10w-40 which is synthetic based and they claim is developed for 2 stroke gearboxes. As they say, you pays yer money and takes yer choice.

I always use Yamalube 2T transmission oil in my bikes, as I figure if they can’t get the spec right no one can.

I'm currently using that Motul stuff too but it hasn't cured my hard to find neutral problem when the engine is hot. I'd be amazed to hear that an oil on it's own would to be honest, my guess is that it's more down to a clearance issue with parts, fine when cold but not once hot. That makes sense to me.

Oh, the fact that you said "easy to get neutral" made me assume that you had had problems in that department before you used that oil.

I'd find your view/claim a LOT less 'silly' IF you had actually tried 75w/85w GL4 Gear oil for yourself. Yup.. the Simple stupid stuff used in Limited Slip Differentials.. not even label suggested for moto transboxes. Regular or Synth Makes no palpable difference. Erm wasn't it only a few months ago you were asking constant questions on How reliable a Yama 2 stroker was.. As you were leary of buying one. Now a few months on .. a fountain of experience?

If you read properly, I used the word 'amazed'.....which meant that I'd be surprised that just the change in oil would do it. The fact that so many other members have mentioned parts like the clutch plates etc actually being the problem seems more realistic to me. I certainly never said I were an 'expert' on this or any other bike.

Everyone will have their personal opinion/experience but I've used them all as well and never really found any "major" difference.
I've used Tesco mineral 10w/40, Carlube mineral 10w/30, Motul Transoil (10w/30 & 10w/40), Silkolene Light Gear Oil, many GL4's, and many types of 10w/30 & 10w/40 motorcycle engine oil.
My opinion is, that if you have any of the above in your LC gearbox and you have a problem (and there's been no previous contamination with an incorrect oil), then it's not the oil.

I always used ATF on a YPVS which eventually made 70 RWHP, never had any problems, although I did use new friction plates on the clutch when I first started using it.
