Cheers Oz Looking for a 400 now 😁 Nice work Paul, she looks a credit to you. Don’t hold your breath Paul, it took me a long time to find mine and then a second one came along just a few months later, so I moved one on to a mate and we are now racing each other to get them finished! After that it will be the 400F’s turn, so I will have an E, F & G model. 😁

Slightly off topic but does anyone know why the newer LC lost 50cc to this back in the day?

Not able to answer that, sure someone on here will. Probably down to valves or carb design and Yamaha felt that they could get output to match or above the older design? I think you are referring to the 400. The bike above is a 250.

350 was a race class. May be the question is why did the rd400 get 50cc more? May be more touring? 🤔

I think the 400 was used by some in the 'production' class but did not have a series as did the LC. As Marcel quotes the LC was probably based on the old TD and TR race models

Slightly off topic but does anyone know why the newer LC lost 50cc to this back in the day? Because the common bottom end, TZ referenced marketing and higher rev ceiling made the 350 the better ‘big brother’ fit to the 250. the 400 was in my opinion a divergence from the faith but a nescessary quick fix for the marketing dept. Also whilst there was a proddy class for 400s, formula 2 was limited to 350cc 2st and 600cc 4st.

I never got into knowing all the different types of racing classes etc and I'm not familiar with the TD/TR models, I just remember that road bikes general went up in cc compared to the previous offering, although at the time I did wonder why the newer TZR were just a 250 rather than a 350 or 400 shall we say. By the time that came popular I were moving on up to large capacity 4 strokes.

Part of it would have been cost cutting , 250/350 share most of the same bottom end If you look at an lc alongside an aircooled you can see where the cost has been designed out , very nicely done , and the first bike I noticed this happening on 350 is also a tie to the tz’s so more heritage ( sales kudos )
My mate had an E exactly like that , lovely bike I had a 250c

Slightly off topic but does anyone know why the newer LC lost 50cc to this back in the day? Two of the classes back in the day were; up to 350cc and the next one was up to 500cc. So the 400 was not that competitive against the 500's, but the 350 LC was able to hold its own in its class.

Looks like I spoke too soon, the bike has started running like shite low down tested the stator and it needs new low windings thought that whilst I was at it I’d change the 40+ year old cdi and coils too
I’ll be ordering some banshee coils from Norbo shortly but what are my options on a replacement CDI ! I think I saw that dynatek did one but does anyone have a better suggestion?
I figured if I change all the ignition system then I’m more likely to have a trouble free summer riding
Cheers

There is an NOS original CDI unit on Evilbay at the moment Paul but it’s not cheap!
I have read that a lot of folks go with Zeeltronic ignitions, which have the advantage of being fully programmable.

HTH Do we only have two options basically? No one copied/making a close to original CDI for these bikes?? Edit: I were thinking of my 4LO rather than aircooled bike, sorry.
