RD 400 1977 Australia (MAYBE C MODEL)

Hi All,

Im very new to rd400's and the first thing i need to finish the build is to know what bikes were imported into Australia regarding which wiring diagram i should be following. 

I have a manual which shows the wiring diagram for Canada, Europe and im presuming the rest of the world.  I have also found a US diagram in colour which is helpful but im not to sure as to what the differences are between the differently supplied models regarding wiring.

If there is anyone who can point me in the direction i would be very appreciative.


The bike is 90% restored and this is the last hurdle.  Its back to original condition and spec.  Engine is completely including all seals, bearings crank, top and bottom end etc.

Over here C-D models have points ignition and the footrests are mounted under the engine
E-F models have electronic ignition and footrests mounted on the frame.

Hi Jubby, whereabouts in the Lucky Country are you located, as I might be able to help with some info for your bike.

If it is a 1977 bike it will either be a C or D model, so you will therefore need the relevant wiring diagram for Oceania, as there are some differences between our bikes and the rest of the world.

C models have no seat cowl and the indicator warning lamps located below they speedo/tacho, whereas the D model has a seat cowl and the indicator repeaters above the clocks.

As has already been mentioned, the Aircooled RD forum is another great source of info.

What’s the VIN number? First 5 digits is enough to identify. Then the details will just come from the parts list and other data.

Jubby, there is what looks like a genuine Australian RD400C Yamaha Service Manual in EBay Australia that should contain the wiring diagram that you are after.
