In the Haynes manual it states timing should be 2.3mm, but I have read that due to the octane quality of today's fuel compared with the'good stuff' of the 1970's timing should be 1.8mm. Anyone any advice?

Just to be clear Penno, are you asking about a Euro/UK spec F model (2R9 engine with CDI) of the US points (2V0) model?
I can’t comment on the 2V0 settings but if you have a 2R9 model engine, my understanding was that the manual figure is 2mm BTDC, although some folk reckon that 1.8mm is better suited to faster burning modern fuel.
I run my bikes at 2mm and that seems fine with 98 RON fuel.

Absolutely not 1.8....that’s 250/350 territory. 2.0 probably on the money...as it was back then actually just the topic attracts a lot of ‘knowledgable’ people.
