First decent run today after MOTing Insuring and Taxing her on Friday. Runs nice and crisp whilst on the side stand. Sat riding along still really crisp and will rev to 9K easily. Then after 5 minutes of riding starts to miss as if fuel starved, then maybe 10 seconds later stalls and free wheels to a stop. Thoughts were, ran out of fuel. No, still some in tank, Also pulled (new) fuel pipe off tank before (new) filter and fuel is coming out of tank. Leave it 3 maybe 4 minutes and it will start again. Rode home keeping it around 5000 rpm. Made it maybe 1 mile then stalled again. Leave it 3 to 4 mintues, it fires up again. I am right in thinking all the fuel is being used in the float bowl and it cant keep up. Could it be float height. Thoughts welcome, I am new to carbs and RDs. Thanks in advance

it sounds like it's the coils on your stator breaking down when they get hot one of the experts will tell you exactly when they come along you could do a search it is quite common

Have you tried it with the fuel tap in the pri position(if it's got one),that will eliminate vacuum problems
Also check the breathers not blocked on the back of the tank and the filters clean in the tap

Could be the HT coil. Had the same problem on my old Triumph car. Gets hot and misses and then stops. Let it cool down and off she goes.

Fuel is pouring out of the tank, Took fuel cap off no change, I think it may be the new in line filter

I had one that did the same. Turned out the float valves stuck were stuck. I replaced them with OE ones from Yamaha and it was sorted. If that's your problem you might be able to get away with just cleaning them.

I had the same issue and rewinding the stator hi-lo speed coils in the stator fixed it . I replaced everthing else including loom and only rewinding the stator fixed it .Sorry a hassle I know. It was an 86 Rz250r, regards, James.

So this evening I checked float levels, both are OK and the float valves are working/shutting on/off. In the PRI position on the fuel tap, fuel is flowing through the in line filter to both carbs. Only found a pipe that had a small split in it although nothing was leaking out. Going to try and replicate fault again tomorrow night and see if its lost spark when it does or whether plug is wet.

Right, its not fuel related. Once warmed up it I can ride it for all of about 1/2 mile or less then it cuts out. Leave it 4/5 minutes it will restart and ride again for a while then cuts out again. Checked voltage at battery 13.2 Volts. This increases when engine is running. Cheapest option now (after testing coil) is new coil.

Surprised nobody has mentioned the CDi, usually happens with the earlier valves CDi's but nothing to say it can't be the same on the later ones too.

i had a similar problem on an 84 250 ypvs bike would start fine but would intermittently cut out, amount of riding would vary could ride it 1/2 mile 1 mile 5 mile or ten foot and it would cut out, sometimes I had to wait a few mins before it would start again sometimes it would start straight away turned out the cdi was screwed

Yep Cdi is also a maybe. Just going through the tests in order of cheapest first (coil).

I'm working in Sheffield on Friday (unless things change) and can drop down to you early afternoon if you're going to be around, I have a stator, CDi or 2 and a couple of sets of coils if you're in a position to test them on your bike?

Wow that's a very kind offer. I'm going to collect a new coil today and try that. We've had some odd readings from the old one that don't match the spec in the book. Fingers crossed.

Well after further tests on the coil, its not that.I Did find a suspect wire from the CDI that was just pushed into a connector without a spade on it, it just fell out when I unwrapped the insulation tape. Secured it properly and went for another spin. Died on me again after 5 minutes. wait 4 mins ride again etc etc got me home eventually. so next step is CDi

Let me know how you get on could you? It sounds similar to the issue I've just posted on the thread below from 8 years ago...

is it an electronic rev counter ? if so does the needle drop quickly when it stalls , if so id suspect cdi/stator had a tdr that did this

Right ho. Another puzzle. My bike has a CDi that is not original. It has had a 29K-50 spliced into the loom. So with this wrong spec one it fires up first kick and runs, gets warm then dies. So I took up an incredibly kind offer from Shytalk to lend me 3 spare CDis to see if the CDi is at fault. These are 1UA-50 Cdis. I have wired each one of these 3 CDis in( not all at once) and all I can get is the occasional back fire out of the exaust. It wont start. Does anyone know what are the differences between 29K-50 and 1UA-50 CDis and is there another electronic component that is required to return it to the original 1UA-50 spec.

Puzzle fixed. Turns out you need to swap the green and red connecting wires over, depending upon which CDi you are using. I found an article by liamo on this forum explaining which CDi will run with which pickup and Stator and what to do to get them to work.

I have a 29 box on my hybrid.
The other news is I sorted my misfiring issue. Turns out it was a (very) bad block connector running to the cdi.
So thanks to forum members (old and new!) for pointing me in the direction of the cdi. As the manual says, check the simple (& cheap) things first..

Update took my bike for another test run with another CDi and guess what. wait for it....... It did the same again. died on me,cool down, start first kick, 100 yards died.etc etc. So where can I get the stator rewound. Sheffield, Derby area.

Finally got round to fixing it. Turns out the first relpy to my problem was correct. Stator was failing when it was warm. I tried a stator pick up kindly supplied by Shytalk but it still cut out so it wasnt that. So the only solution was a new stator from Norbo. After a couple of successful 15 minute runs this week (in case it left me stranded miles away from home) I went out tonight on an hour run and it ran faultlessly. Many thanks to all who have offfered advice and help. I may have pulled the remainder of my hair out left to sort it myself.
