Hi
I know im not the only person to have had problems with PJ1 paint after checking other forums.
I just rebuilt a z900 engine for a customer and painted the head and barrels with this rubbish new formula PJ1. (I have used the old stuff for years and its been very good) The paint goes soft when the motors hot. Got a customer giving me grief now because of this. It could end up costing me a lot of money. I tried contacting PJ1 in the U.S and they bounced me back
to Feridax the UK distributor. I have an old can of PJ1 from about 5 years ago and it states "made in USA" this new stuff is made in the UK.
If you feel like i do that this stuff is not fit for purpose call Feridax : 01384 413841 option 1 and ask for Mr. Mahmood hes one of there buyers apparently. I am now waiting for someone to get back to me
to sort this out. It took me a lot of time to strip and clean the head and barrels, they were spotless before painting. The more people complain the better. A mate of mine has just painted his whole engine with this stuff and refitted it. God knows if he will have the same problem.
Regards

Yes the new stuff is crap.
How long has he run the motor?
A lot of these paints "sweat" until all the solvent has flashed off.
May take hours but it should eventually cure

Yep I had the same problem with it going soft, had to strip it off and start again using the simonize product, baking it on in the oven. Seems to of sorted it now.

Its got to bake on to cure the paint for at least 20mins then when it cools it should harden up . I presume its pj1 engine paint satin or gloss.

Isn't this the problem though as baking the parts in an oven etc is different to just starting the engine and letting it fry ?

Put my parts in the oven to heat up before painting, then back in after with oven off. Still crap!!

Just an update. Complained again to the distributors feridax. They are going to pick up the remnants of the can from the shop i bought it from.
They say they are going to send it back to PJ1 for testing . Before returning what was left i tried it again. A clean piece of steel was used and 3 coats applied in 10 minute intervals. It was left to dry then i cured it in an oven at 150 degrees c. Left it to cool then brought it up to 120 degrees c and it scratched off. This stuff is simply not fit for purpose. Plus i now have an irate customer threatening me with legal action because his newly built motor has soft peeling paint. Dont buy this stuff!!

I have used Plasticote BBQ paint which is very durable but not petrol resistant
Sounds like the new PJ1 needs to be avoided then

i had probs with the old stuff on my lc engine cases, the stuff was just chipping off when knocked, so i sprayed the cases with acid 8 primmer that cured the prob, i wouldnt use it again, too expensive for the crap quality durability imo
