What is the ruling now with DVLA.
Are we now back to rolling years past 40years.
Reason i ask is i have just bought a January 1976 kawasaki 400 that s been restored and needs running in. previous owner has been restoring it for a few years,so the log books does not say its historical.
If its its over 40y,which it his,is it classed as historical and how do i get the V5 changed

Yes it's a rolling 40 years now but you have to ask.
If you don't ask you won't get
Think you can so it at the post office. Best contact DVLA to check for sure

Just tax it at the Post Office, ask for it to be changed to Historic. Post Office will send V5 to DVLA for you and you'll get a new V5 with the taxation class change done. That's all I did last year when my H2 became eligible.

Just looked on the DVLA website it Says upto Jan 8th 1976 for historical Tax.
My bike is 26th Jan 76.
So my bike must have been made in 75
Do they mean date of firsts registration, not manufactured

They say registered before 7th of Jan as it has to be manufactured in 76 not registered
As it is now 2017 would the rolling 40 not now be before Jan 2017

I've done a couple now in the last couple of years.
They didn't become Tax free until 1st April 1st of the year they became eligible.
Then on 1st April, I just went to the Post Office, wrote "Historic" in the Taxation class, they took the V5c from me and sent it off and taxed the vehicle for no cost. A week or so later I got the new V5 showing the new Taxation Class.

If i wait while april first i can go write historical on the V5 at the post office, then send it off

As far as I remember it goes on the registration date on the V5c and must be 40yrs old on or before 31st December before the upcoming April 1st.
Make sense ?.
Think yours should have been eligible from April last year ?.
Just take your V5 to the post office, they will scan the barcode and tell you.
