When I am in the I can select any gear easily, even neutral postion. But when I am riding the bike.
The gears again select easily, but the neutral can be a pain to sect.
If I switch the ignition off and back on,neutral selection is no problem.
The bike as been stood for a lot of years, will it get better through being used.
Any ideas please.

You cna get rust form on the steel plates. Would be worth pulling the side cover off and checking or put the bike in gear with the engine not running and try to push it to see how much resistance there is

I've had the side off, replaced a broken friction pad. cleaned and oiled all the plates. operated the clutch lever and saw the plates separating

Try GL4 gearbox oil.

Just a thought - do you have the standard "long" gear lever? I've known people change the lever / fit rear sets etc. which really messes up neutral selection. with a shorter lever the movement required is shorter, which makes it really sensitive.
