Well having read many of the past posts around head gasket issues, I am completely stumped whether to use gasket sealant or not. I'm re-using a Gen Yam gasket which hasn't done much mileage. Personally i'm a believer of a thin smear of gasket however many on the forum say yes many say no!! My question to the yes boys is which one??
I've heard that threebond is the way to go but there's a number of different ones is it 1104, 1184 or 1215??

How do you mean, not much mileage?? If its been on then its no good to re-use IMO. There is a special black coating/sealant on the gen gasket, but that won't be there now. I never use additional sealant.

If it failed that quickly then you need to check everything is flat.

If it's of any use, the genuine head gasket on my YPVS engine is on its third fitment with the thinnest smear of RTV clear silicone and it's never leaked.
But like has been said, if a genuine gasket leaked on its first usage, then something isn't right or it wasn't torqued correctly.
Did you do a warm up, cool down, then re-torque ?.
I do the barrel nuts up finger tight (no spanners), then torque the head down, then tighten the barrel nuts. Then I run it for a couple of mins without coolant in until the barrels are quite warm (but nowhere near hot), then I let it cool all day or overnight, then re-torque, then fill with coolant.
Never had any probs

Again; Spray the thing with Metallic rattle can Laquer. Some even swear by /recommend Clear laquer tho. OR IF you have it: Permatex Coppercoat Gasket spray. Which has Genuinely proven to work. Doing so, one can reuse the stamped metal headgasket (if undamaged) Multiple times, as in a dozen or so. Reliably

Would be interesting to know what the thin layer is on the gaskets that then mates to the surfaces and torqued and heated up

Well I just bought some of that permatex copper spray gasket as I am going to replace my power valve seals on one of my hybrids soon. In the past when I have removed my old genuine head gaskets some but not all of the black sealant stayed but not all. My question is what preparation do I do to the old gasket before I spray the copper gasket spray on. Do I need to remove all the old sealant so I have a smooth surface, and what do you guys use to clean surface up?
