Is it much hassle importing a bike or is it best left to someone who knows what they are doing?

ts not hrd all you need to do is bring it in , in the back of a van and then its some hassle getting a v5 but the getting in from an ue country is not a problem . from japan is more hassle

Both HMRC and DVLA act like they want to help you, so there's no reason for the stigma attached. (rightly so, as classic imports are a boost to the economy)
If it's from the EU you have two weeks to declare it online, but that depends on the date on your receipt that they never check anyway.
I've got some procedures posted in the tips and help section. I do half a dozen per year. They've never asked to see the bike or never any questions, they just want the fees and to know you're a legit person (i.d address etc)
Biggest problem I've had so far was being given wrong age related letters that is still ongoing after 8 months. If you do customs in post theyve been known to lose papers, so photocopy everything.
