Just put some hytech fibre reeds in over the original ones, just wondering if they should sit about 0.5mm off of the reed cage? The original ones were say on it flush

How does yours run with them compares? I haven't got round to sorting mine out completely yet I can't really give you any worthwhile feedback at the moment. I have just rebuilt my engine- yet I have running issues. I know the engine has been built well and the carb is sound. New coil on order as the spark looks poor, fouled plug and ohms test confirms. What's yours running like? I did notice the same clearance.

I'll give you an update when I'm sorted with it. I had some bad carb troubles when I first got mine though

I took out the read block and turned the reeds over and there is still a small gap. It still ain't perfect, ticker over is up and down and occasionally it hesitates and boggs down when you open the throttle. What are your symptoms?

I had a set of HiTecs back in the day and never had a problem. Are yours new- where did you get them from? I got my from... Yambits who claim they are the real deal.

I got mine from hytech ebay shop, the gap shouldn't make a difference in theory as of the negative pressure created. Did you have a gasket inbetween the reed cage and the cylinder?

The little gaps are no prob. The reeds are opened and closed by crankcase pressure. Back in the day the best racing reeds were "Harpower" reeds. every so often you had to take them out of the blocks and using hot water, bend them into a bow shape, with a 1.5mm gap between the reed and the middle of the cage, with the tips of the reed touching the cage. The reeds were manufactured from Irish linen and some sort of resin.

Sounds like you have an air leak somewhere between the carb and barrel. let it tick over then to confirm spray some carb/brake cleaner around all mating surfaces.

I thought this, sprayed some carb cleaner and it didn't start to rev erratically or anything which I was surprised at.

I got mine in a kit. Seems ok to me. Tried the spray test- no leaks. Started like a bag of shite this evening. After bogging down, no pick up, then back- firing it started to behave its self. It aint right- just wish I had a set of steel reeds to compare. Its a total head fu*k and embarrassing.
