Could anyone recommend a tyre fitter in the Northants or South Midlands area please, as I haven't lived in the area for long? The priority here would be someone who takes a little more care than your standard dealership in not damaging the paintwork on the rim, so probably a smaller bike shop. Also, when I do find someone, are they generally ok if you provide the tyre as you can get a BT45 front tyre (100/90 'V' rating) for about £72 from Ebay? Thanks.

Sorry don't live near you, but i took some nicely powdercoated wheels into a large car place that also fitted car/bike tyres, used a lovely machine that never even touched the rim, my local small shop still uses tyre levers etc so not always better. just have a word with whoever you deal with and see if you can watch??

I got so p*ssed of with the inability of 99% of tyre fitters being able to fit a tyre correctly (i.e. yellow dot next to the valve) and doing so without marking rims and then balancing them properly that I invested about £60 in everything you need to do them yourself. 6 tyre changes and you're starting to save money from that point on You only need a bead breaker, rim protectors, proper tyre soap, decent tyre levers, some weights and a basic balancer. Last summer I changed the tyres on my GSXR1000 a 190 & 120, did a set of RGV wheels and a few smaller bikes, oh a re-balanced a tyre that I'd previously paid to be fitted as it was way out, so quids in already. Takes a bit of elbow power and a bit of time, and also nice if you have a helper but still quicker than driving to and from a garage and waiting for them to do it.

Churchills At Pottersbury (spell check) on the A5 near Towcester. Jess Thanks for the recommendation on this. I'll defo give them a call and see how much they can supply and fit for. Incidentally, are they also good for general repair jobs, like a fork rebuild? Have you or Copper99 had any other work done there? Cheers.

I admire you and totally understand why you'd want to buy the kit yourself, although I don't think I do enough miles these days to justify it.

Never had any repair work done by them but they have a workshop and sell bikes. Copper99 just had some work done by a shop at Silverstone forget the name something moto, he was pleased with the work and price. Where in Northants are you? Jess

I'm in Daventry, so either Churchills or the place at Silverstone would be fine. I need to redo the fork seals, but on another thread I'm told it's straightforward so may actually have a crack at it myself.

If you dont get to do them yourself, I used Daryll at IDP moto , just down the road at Silverstone (who built the Pro Am bikes) to go over my 500, they did a great job and the price was good. There is a good weekly meet at Allseasons Cafe, Billing Garden Centre, on a Wednesday, when you get it on the road, pop along, always a few LCs in attendance..drop me a PM.

Thanks for the recommendation... if I don't use them for the fork seals, there's bound to be something else that needs doing along the way. I've seen loads of bikes at Allseasons every so often as I moved from Buckingham last December and the girlfriend lives in Coventry, so it's a route I know well. However, good to know that the LC clan is represented there, because I must admit I never spotted any with a quick glance from the car. Will definitely pop along once the bike's on the road
