Hi Does anyone know how you tax an historic vehicle? I have a bike that is 40 years old so my understanding is that it should now be tax exempt after 1st April on the rolling 40yr scheme but when I try to tax it on line, it still wants to charge me the normal rate?
Thanks Greg

I got a tax exempt car, it should say something like historic / tax except vehicle on the taxation / logbook details, if it hasn't been taxed or had a change of owners for years you may need to contact the dvla to get the details updated.
Regards Mark.

Just remembered the cut off date is ( I think ) 1973 so it could it be 40 years old and not tax exempt.

Hello Victor.
It used to be 1st Jan 1973, however the rolling exemption as reintroduced for vehicles over 40 years old to start from 1st April 2016. This is not automatic and you will need to take your V5, MOT into the postoffice and use the form to change the taxation class. The post office will send off the form to DVLA and you will get a new V5 with new taxation class. Check the DVLA website and it will tell you what to do!

Back in the day the renewal just said 0.00 as the cost and you just used to go to the PO as usual and they did the paperwork and produced you a tax disk (ohh the old days of those!) and then charged you nothing. That was around 2000ish, as thats when I sold my old Mk3 spit and Alfa Zagato... lovely cars and free to drive

Even more free now that you don't need to MOT them as well.

Thanks all, It is rolling 40 years now but only comes into force on 1st April each year. I could not find details on DVLA website so went to post office and could not do there. Looks like I have to send off v5 to get taxation class changed and then apply.... Which will take ages before I can get bike back on the road.

Nope, I did this last year.
You need to wait until the very day the bike becomes eligable for free/Historic Tax (1st April after it was 40 years old on the 31st December just gone)
On that day (1st April) or any day after that date, you can take your V5C to the post office to Tax it, when he scans the V5C it will recognise it is now free, Tax the bike and charge you nothing.
At the same time, write "HISTORIC VEHICLE" on the Taxation Class changes section, then they will take the V5C from you and send it off.
A couple of weeks later you will get your new V5C back with the Taxation Class changed and job done.

It did not take that long when I taxed the 1938 Francis Barnett. Finding proof of the original registration number in order to keep it was the big issue. That involved getting a photocopy of the original registration card from the place it was first registered. Fortunately the original owner was a family member, and I knew where he had lived, so the original registration office was easy to guess. Once everything was in place, it took about fourteen days.

Yeah but if you have a V5C and your bike was registered on or before 31st December 1975 it will be free to Tax from yesterday. One of our bikes was registered 31st December 1974 (luckily in on the last day) and we got it done last year. I took the V5 in on 31st March to Tax it for the next day and it wouldn't do it. Took it in the next day (1st April) and no problem to Tax it for free and send the V5 off with the change

I took my V5 to the post office today and they said they could not do it and I had to send to DVLA??? The V5 says go to your local DLVA office (there isn't one any longer)and I did eventually find reference to it on web site and it said go to the post office! Looey when you went to the post office were you able to get taxed for free there and then or did you have to wait for V5 to come back? Greg

Looey when you went to the post office were you able to get taxed for free there and then or did you have to wait for V5 to come back? Greg It was taxed for free there and then. I then wrote the Taxation Class change on the V5, gave it to the Post Office man, and he sent it off to action the change. The day the vehicle becomes eligable for free Tax, the system knows and the charge is now free. The Post Office just need to Tax the bike in the same way they would normally and it will say the payment is nil. Try another Post Office, they obviously don't know the process.

Tried a small local post office and got it taxed no problem and they sent off form to DVLA to get taxation class changed on the V5. Clearly some staff training required at the main post office!
