Rebuild is almost finished and engine is back in one piece and in the frame so its time for the oil, going to use 10/40 but not sure whether to use mineral, semi synthetic or fully synthetic? As the oils about at the time of production were mineral based thought I'd use that but open to suggestions.
Thanks in advance

I used to use 10/40 mineral and change it very regular so it was always golden. Never had any issues but oil has got better so i would run the engine in on mineral and if not doing big miles a low ash semi for piece of mind!!! You could use fully but imo on a low rev in single its a bit of a waist. What ever you choose run her in on mineral I've known a few burn oil as the rings never seem to bed just glaze the bore for some reason.

I have used fully synth in all my singles, KTM620/640s and XT500 and XL500R. some people moan about it, some also use it. Its an oil discussion, so you get that lol.

I just used cheap Halfords 10w40.
Was rebuilt but always a little puff of smoke when you blipped it.
Was never sure if it was burning oil or if it was the lead additive which is essential on these engines

Thanks for the replies, found a gallon of Putoline semi synthetic in the workshop so will be running it on that, plan to change it every 500 miles or so, engine is low mileage with only 4000 miles on the clock, had new valve seals and that's all it needed, started 2nd kick and ticked over beautifully, nice one !!!

Emm yes picky would be good especially if its on the back wheel? Does it still have the 23" wheel fitted? Last wheelie I did was on my 350lc not long after I bought it 30+ years ago now, ( reg no.SHE592Y) dropped it from 4th to 3rd to pass a lorry, front wheel came straight up, nearly sh1t myself! !! Yes it still has a 23 inch font wheel which I have had respond and hub powder coated so looks presentable now. Have got another set of hubs to be respoked with modern sized supermoto rims when I get some spare cash so i can get so me decent rubber on it, the 23 inch is a proper pig to get a decent tyre for, especially one that might stick to the road.

Sounds good get a picky of her up would be great to see. Be interesting to see what she looks like wearing SM wheels……… bloody good bike. Always had a soft spot for big thumpers although sadly i currently have non. Previously owned XL185s, XR250R, XR400R, XR500R and xl600 also had SUZUKI DR350 Yam WR400 and WR450F XT600 TENERE and KTM400. Also had a mix of 2 stroke dirt bikes from Honda MTX, Yam DT125, KWAK KMX200, HONDA CR 480, KTM200 probably few others I've missed but loved me dirt bikes would be tempted by sausages 220 but i don't have any funds for another bike at the minuite. Good luck with your 500s its one I've never owned but have had the privilege of rideing and i loved it proper torque monster and wheelie machine always fancied a mid 80s XR600R but they were a heavy beast even back in the day.

I've got a spare set of hubs which I'm hoping to get made up in to a set of super moto wheels although I'm not too sure of what size rims would be best. Bought this as it was cheap at£500? never having ridden one myself until last week when I finally got round to getting the chain on it and riding it round the garden. Having trouble with the back light wiring, it worked fine before I stripped it but not when Ire connected it all so after many hours of cursing it its now in the local bike shop where hopefully when the electrics are sorted will come out with a fresh MOT. We will then see what it rides like which will determine whether or not I keep it or not. Will get some piccys up as soon as I get a moment, be patient though !!!
