Thanks mate, I hope the bike ends up how I picture it.
I now have to wait for the engine work to be done. Then the frame mods can be carried out. All of that work is out of my hands. Once that stage is done, then it's the dry build.
So I've started restoring a few bits and bobs, all the usual stuff, so the finished parts pile is beginning to grow. I'll post up the "boring bits" until the crankcases come back and know I've got to be patient. I'm itching to get on with it, but could waste a lot of time/money guessing parts I need.
Dusty has been a great help. He lets me measure and poke around his hybrids and has talked me through the frame/suspension mods. He really knows his stuff. Top man. He's even offered to polish my forks but I can't decide on polished or satin black, any thoughts anyone?
Thanks all, for the interest and encouragement
Mark

Hi Mark Doesn't take long to pick my brains !! All credit to you mate, this isn't your average special by a long way, and the effort to bring it all together is down to you. It will be an awesome special without doubt. I must say, having both polished and anodised black forks, the anodised set win for me. You can have a good look at them tomorrow. I like the polished set on my blue bike - real labour of love to get them like that - but the anodised finish looks so right. Probably easier to keep them looking good too. I 'll catch you tomorrow Regards Dusty

Hi Mark Switchgear looks brand new - great job And the man cave looks fantastic - really well worth the effort. Being able to build the 550 in there will be great. Plus the missus doesn't have to walk so far to bring your tea to you . Enjoy Stafford - wish I could make it but kitchen is GO !! Dusty

Thanks Dusty, I'm looking forward to having a warm insulated place to work and store a couple of bikes. Both my garage and workshop are concrete and condensate from the floor and walls so I Vac/bag the blue LC and all the other bikes get wiped down every week through winter - bores me silly.
The missus liked your thinking on the tea!
Three of us going to Stafford. I want to go on Saturday, but Harry will be there on Sunday (his RD600 air cooled will be on display), so I would love to meet him in person finally. I'm hoping Graham will be there as well - I just want to shake hands if you know what I mean. Anyway the weather might make the decision for me. Shame you can't make it mate. Let me know if you need a hand on your kitchen. I'll be in touch soon
Cheers Mark

Mark, great work, its going to be killer and that man cave is a work of art! I wonder if you could do me a favour since you have your swingarm off the bike and do two measurements for me? I ask as Im having a wheel alignment problem with my LC with the same swingarm... Im looking for the measurements on both sides of the swingarm at the pivot. What im after is the distance that the pivot tube part of the arm protrudes past the square section, ie the gap between the red lines on the pic below, without the end cap would be best, but I'll take whatever I can get. If anyone else has this swingarm in an LC and can provide these measurements Im keen to have them from others as well if you dont mind. I think my issue was that I didnt have my arm modded by NK and it was done locally and maybe they didnt do what I asked, sigh.

Thanks Steve and Tacky1, Cheers for posting comments. The build should really get going in a month or so. In the mean time I can finish the new man cave.
Once the engine parts are back I'll do the dry build over winter. But it will probably be a slow burner as I know that some sections of the build will be tricky.
Cheers Mark.

I think my issue was that I didnt have my arm modded by NK and it was done locally and maybe they didnt do what I asked, sigh. Jon, just measured the swingarm. The easiest place to measure from was the lower raised part of the arm. I measured as close to the round section as I could (as the arm tapers toward the round section), close to the weld.
With the dust caps removed - right side 12mm, left side 11mm. length of round section 197mm again with dust caps removed.
When fitted to an LC frame, with an LC engine it needs a sprocket offset of approx. 9mm for chain alignment.
HTH let me know if you need any further measurements.
Regards Mark

Thanks Mark, youre a star! Yes the LC motor needs the offset sprocket, but it was said that when using the ypvs motor in the LC frame that you didnt need any offset at all due to the longer output shaft bush, but something is awry with my alignment for sure as I think that maybe mine does, tho spacing out the sprocket that takes the chain very close to the frame hence why Im wondering about my arm mods. I just want to get it totally right this time as Im over messing with this issue over the years

Cheers Mark (twostrokebrit), Gary and Duncan. Nice comments.
I went to the Stafford Show last Sunday and saw two Allen Millyard creations. The 50 (turned into a 100 V twin) I have only seen pictures of. Also an H2 turned into a 4 cylinder.

I just don't know how he makes his bikes look like they came out of the factory Such a talent, which leads me to the main reason for going to the show. Harry (who is the guy altering my cases/cylinder and head), told me 2 of his bikes were at the show.
First his 600 triple air cooled
SDC10542
SDC10622 What the images don't show is the four exhausts (middle cylinder downpipe splitting into two). Also the front frame tubes are a work of art the way they curve round the exhausts.
Next up we have Harry's LC triple. Now I'm sorry the pictures aren't great but the bike was squeezed in and difficult to get near.
SDC10551
SDC10550
The frame and exhausts are hidden by the bellypan, but you can see the extended radiator and rad guard. The bike looks fairly standard, but look closely and just about everything has been modified and the engineering is superb.
The bike was built around 15 years ago.

what USD forks are on the LC ? I'm almost sure the forks/ mudguard/ brakes are RGV250. I don't know what wheels he has used though. The wheels have changed from when the bike was first built as he made his own wheels originally!

Your right mark , harrys 550 has rgv forks and yokes and modded Honda wheels off something like a cb400 and last time I saw it I think he was running six pot calipers

I've got the magazine that featured Harry's bike when it was first built, (also got the mag for your outrageous LC) and I think Harry's bike had what the author described as home made comstar wheels! I know he's made a few changes over the years.
We'll take soon, as I like what you've done with your rear mudguard.

I haven't posted for a while so I thought I'd bring you all up to date. The new man cave is finished so I have a dry, warm area to build the 550. Unfortunately I still don't have the engine parts back yet so I'm just cleaning up/restoring parts and still collecting.

Dusty, it's a great question. I can't do the frame mods until I have the crankcases and top end back. The engine mounts at the front have to be moved. The front frame tubes have to be moved (the outer exhausts will line up with the frame tubes) The frame has to be widened by 20mm or so for the chain run. Tie bar brackets have to be welded on in a non standard place. Plus various brackets to be added. Until the frame is altered I cant do the front and rear suspension.
To cut and weld the cases together without warping them is the problem. Jigs have to be made and dare I say it - only a handful of people have the skills and experience to do the work. Harry has done several, but one of his stipulations for taking on the job, was not to be hassled or rushed. So unfortunately I have to wait and simply don't know when the engine parts will be back. But I hope soon.
At the moment I'm repairing a petrol tank and collecting parts to modify the clutch and rear mudguard. Pictures of the tank soon
Mark
