Hi
When looking at my gearbox oil level i have noticed over the last week or so that it has gone up quite a bit. Not sure if its water or oil. Anybody know what the most likely culprit for this could be ?

You would notice if it was water because it would go white. Most likely the oil seal on the oil pump worm shaft.

Question for arrow, is the seal u mentioned the only barrier between the two stroke oil and gearbox oil ? Just wasnt sure that the 2 stroke oil reached that far. I just presumed that the seal just stopped the gearbox oil coming out. Either way it looks like the clutch cover has to come off again at the expense of yet another gasket. Lol.

That seal has gear oil one side and 2T oil on the other side. Its normally pretty reliable. And yes, its the only barrier. Just for your info, the shaft has two bearings, one is a 5/16" bore in the oil pump itself and the other is a steel bush that locates in the r/h cover. On very rare occasions the bush can be missing effectively causing the seal to act as one of the bearings against the thrust of the drive gear.

Its most likey water, it wont go white until the engine has been run to mix it. The oil floats on the water. Check coolant level and if its dropping it will be the water pump seal that has given up.

Yes mate as you mentioned it was the seal. Had a small nick in the rubber. All sorted now. Cheers for that
