Hi, having got myself an RD400E in good condition but not running , I have decided to strip it down and re-build it. I have got the engine and gearbox split and noticed the primary driven gear is missing part of a tooth of which I found in top of the crank case with what looks like the remains of a spring washer, the clutch centre has damage to the shaft flange face and gear nut and lock washer have also been damaged Is this a common problem ? I am looking for any advice that you can pass on, l live in the Derby area so any recommendations of a good machine shop engine/builder to check crank out also in the market for new parts Any ideas welcome.

Hi, no that's not a common problem, I've stripped and rebuilt a lot of these engines for customers and the only common problem I've seen in that area is cracking around the kick starter shaft spigot hole (which is a common problem)
Finding parts for the 400 E/F engines isn't that easy, a lot of parts are specific to that model, crank, stator, flywheel, barrels, carb's for example, you need to make sure you get the right clutch assembly, don't believe what people say about the clutches all being the same between A/C, LC's and YPVS, they are definately not, there are variances between the 3, if you get a new primary gear make sure it matches up to the main gear and that the numbers add up correctly, IIRC its 134 to 136 I think, for LC's and YPVS's its 156
What new parts you after ?

Hi, here is the main list of parts I will need fork stanchions, wiring loom, ign switch, master cyl kits, brake calliper piston's and seal kits, pads, brake lines, rear mudguard, throttle cables, plus various rubber mounting parts, decals. Towards the end of this rebuild I will be looking at whether to keep the original std exhausts of which one has got some dents to its top edge, restored or get some after market Allspeed type pipes.
