Not posted for a while, been doing the odd bit in the background but had been concentrating on getting my other bikes ready for summer. Still gathering parts but have stripped the forks for new stanchions and to re finish the bottoms. Got a pair of wheels that had already been dipped, had intended to get them powdercoated and diamond cut so got rings made up to protect the discs but they let me down saying they could not cut the complete spoke so decided to do them myself. 6 hours later and 3 cans of Barbeque paint along with some prep on the edges with a scotchbrite disc ended in these Started to pull the motor apart so it could get blasted along with the forks, top yoke and clip ons. Bores good so will get a light hone with the tool I just bought. managed to find NOS genuine 31k pistons and rings so jobs a good un. Crank also looks and feels good. luckily the oil pump had syphoned the oil into the crankcases giving it a nice bath. Thank god I never tried to start it. Its coming out anyway for new seals and the cases blasted so will check properly when it's out Steve

Never realized it had been so long. Got fed up with no room so started building a workshop which has dragged on. Cant graft like I used too. Anyway bike should have been a rolling chassis this weekend as my wife was away but done my ankle in Friday teatime so a bit stuffed. Had this little lot ready to build the forks and suspension. The diy re plated end caps came up well and spot the NOS stand Wheels with tyre s now fitted ready to go Did manage tonight to sort out some of the new bits and bobs Very pleased with the holy grail of N1 restos - a NOS seat cover Just need to get someone to fit it Steve

Still cant get a shoe on but pressure feeling has eased so trying to get it moving some more. Don't want the joint seizing up Few bits done with one shoe on. Plated a few more parts. Degreased then left for an hour in a bucket of acid pickle to remove the old zinc plating. Overnight it removes all rust. Not happy with the 1st set of chain adjusters as the alloy was pitted on one and after removing the rust from the threads it left a rough finish that did not look right once plated. Got another set and plated them Fitted the bearings back in the swinger with the newly plated end caps. Fitted new dog leg bushes and seals and even managed to find a NOS chain slider. All ready to fit Had a nice olive bottom yoke on a shelf for years so finally found a use for it. Taper bearings fitted along with new top nut and cover and some re plated pinch bolts Need to build the forks next Steve

I noticed new fork tubes, does this bike run the 85 variable damper & if so where did you find fork tubes please? Very nice build, cant wait for more updates. I have been really lucky with the nos parts. Found a good few parts just searching the part number. Some folk don't know what they have so listed that way. Especially if the part was fitted to a less popular bike. Found a french bloke selling nos clock top plates listed as fzr but had the correct 1ar part number. £60 each and he had 3. The stanchions are the variable damper ones that have the hex nut on top and the air valve. Different from the early ones and the f2. Norbo sells them Steve

Also just checked and he does not have them listed anymore so must be gone. You can get the warning light decals if you refurb one from kateannwells on ebay Steve

Always worth searching ebay.com for part numbers without putting in the first bit too - I found the tank cap was still available doing that (same as the XJ550) as well as the NLA front indicators with long stems (XT500).

Bit more progress. Bottom end stripped and small fortune spent on vapour blasting all engine parts and brake calipers was impressed with the gastreos nickel plating kit so bought a zinc one complete with the passivation chemicals plating the engine studs Got a nice collection of hazardous chemicals now New copy brake lines came with zinc ends but N1 should be Olive so tested the passivate on the brake line banjo's and bolts. Turned out quite well Brake calipers were blasted so painted with VHT caliper paint, pistons polished, new seals fitted and replated bolts fitted. Even built a spare pair for punting painted the top case in VHT satin black barrel paint. Unfortunately all 4 mains on the crank had a bit too much wobble for my liking but got the good crank that came out my engine to fit the long stroke one. All well within spec so will fit that one. Waiting for a barrel to come back from my local engineer as someone had snapped an exhaust stud then re drilled and tapped a new thread but off centre and at a slight angle so having it drilled out larger, a threaded plug fitted then drilled and tapped correctly Steve

Where did you get the plating kit from? Plating kit from gastreos plating. They are on ebay and also have a website The plating kit is 65 quid posted on ebay and came with clear/blue and yellow passivated. Bought the olive passivated from their website for £21 delivered. The olive stuff is really nasty. Will burn you badly and enough toxic ingredients to give you a slow painful death. A lot of chromate in it so not the best for the environment. Great as you can buy zinc bolts and just dip them in it for a minute and hey presto it's olive. If you want darker green you can get a darkner from them to add to the solution. Already had a bucket of dry acid pickle from them. Strips off old zinc and removes rust. Steve

Exhaust studs replaced now the thread repair is done. YPVS sanded back to bare alloy and new PV seals, bushes and retainers fitted Gearbox internals and replacement crank fitted. Threads were shot on the sprocket thread so shaft was replaced along with first gear as the inner bronze bush had moved over and damaged itself on the shaft splines. New genuine seals throughout. New shift shaft, spacer and neutral switch cover fitted All bolted together now with nice new bolts, nuts and replated studs Found some swarf on the clutch basket bush and excessive play so fitted a new inner spacer and replaced the bronze bush.
