I have just sat down feeling very satisfied after I torqued down the cylinder on my LC with new gasgets etc. and was leafing through the workshop manual when I read that you shouldn't put sealant on the head gasget. I have been stripng the head on my LC for over 20 years and always used sealant. Have I been wrong? Will this cause a problem? Should I strip and replace the gasget before the engine goes back in. ?

Used sealant every time back in the day, re using pattern head gaskets. Never had any probs, and did it many times. Just a very thin smear.

Some say use sealant, others say not. I am in the latter group. Many have success either way.

Hi, If it works and doesn't leak, I wouldn't worry. You wont want to change a perfectly good gasket. I just have and it cost me £36.00 for the privelage ! And I've still got a leak !! No leak - no problem Dusty

The thinnest smear of sealant is fine. If you put anything other than thinnest smear, it will get squashed out and possibly block the coolant passages.
If there's nothing wrong with the barrels, head or the mating surfaces on either, then they will seal perfectly well time and time again with the same gasket using a sealant.
