Another run out today, all was well. Both John and Jimmy came past me, as that happened to johns, jimmys seized at the same time, strange.

Ooooops They very rarely have timing issues, so would suspect jetting or a serious air leak (induction, or left crank seal etc.)

The barrel is on its last rebore .2mm. does anyone know if its possible to get a .25 piston?
The clutch and basket are knackered and it's going to need a bit of welding where a snapped chain in its past life has weakened the cases.

looks like an air leak! did you find anything when you stripped it ? I didn't, the only thing that I can think of was that I foolishly didn't re-jet after fitting my new Gibson exhaust. It did have a micron on it so I kind of thought it would be OK. I should know better.

If it was jetted ok for a Micron fitted it deffo won't need a bigger main jet for an Allspeed with no other changes.
Must be something else for that to happen.
What carb and main jet are you running ?.

Hi Looey, it is running the standard carb and to be honest I haven't checked to see what jet is in it, the bike and parts (carb) are in my shed which doesn't have a light in.
Cheers for the reply, I will dig it out over the weekend and check and report back.

Ok mate, Best find out what carb it is (12A, 10W 1GU etc.) and also what main jet is fitted before you go riding it again . Let us know

what looey said above id do a leak down test on it before i ran it mate my mates bike had a mend on the crankcase and just a slight crack that they missed didnt even look like it would be a problem but rd400 went bang !

Hello everyone I should have my engine back this week, it has had the crankcase welded where previous chain damage had not been fixed, it has also had the clutch basket/gear replaced, a new barrel, cylinder head and loads of things sorted that were not right. I am dropping the tank off to get painted after it was knocked in the shed which made petrol run out of the cap and ruin the paint, I will be checking the jetting and also the needle position before it goes on the road. It has been tuned a bit too. (don't want to say to much as Paul25 will be looking)

Me on the left with my mates 125lc that I crashed in January 1983, I sprayed the frame and wheels Red and fitted a 350lc headlight.
The motor was tuned by ARD on westagte road Newcastle, it went canny good after that and I didn't crash it again.
The other photo is of me at Brands in 1983 also
