Done this recently on my TZR125 and it works incredibly well but you need to be very careful with that surface flash rusting that forms as soon as you've got the vinegar out. What happens is, the petrol slowly washes it off and it accumulates in like loads of orange thin flakes and on mine it eventually blocked the fuel tap filter inside the tank. I've since removed the tap again and cleaned and flushed it all out and it seems to be fine now

I've put some fuel in with a load of 2 stroke oil in and splash it around and left it in

Yeah that's what I did as well but over time it washed it off. Only needed one flush and clean after that and has stayed perfect in there ever since . Yours doesn't look quite as badly flashed over as mine was, so you might be ok

Can you give a few more details of how to do this please as I am wanting to have a go myself.
Is it just straight white vinegar or is it diluted at all?
Do you just fill it to the brim and leave it, if so how long did you leave it for etc?
Is it ok if any gets on the paintwork?
Once drained do you just flush some oil/petrol around as don't want to put water back in it.
Sorry for so many questions.
Thanks

Yours doesn't look quite as badly flashed over as mine was, so you might be ok I stuck a 2 stroke mix in mine although like an idiot there was more 2 stroke than petrol which took some getting rid of. I got a tooth brush in mine during the first proper fill and got to as much as i could and ran it for a couple of tanks and then removed the tap expecting the filter to be the worst for it but vertually nothing and i must have had the carbs off over a dozen times since and no sign of anthing in there. Oh and tanks have no preference to white vinegar, any vinegar will do. My tank was especially bad but it didnt stop it coming up like new. when i drained it i just kept straining it through a T shirt, putting it back in until the vinegar was completly free of rust deposits and swilled out after with a bit of diesel.

when I've done it in the past, I wash them out with some deisel, I swill it around (1 gallon of it) and then drain it out into a container to use next time, then fill with petrol/2t mix, it smokes a little more than normal for a 2 stroke, but stops the rust and being deisel is good for keeping the rust off if your not filling it up straight away with petrol etc

vinegar will do, or acetic acid, even coca cola believe it or not (tad expensive though)
the vinegar will not harm your paint work, it isn't that strong, lets face it you eat it when you visit the chippy
A good substitute is Phosphoric acid (that's what is in coca cola) use about a 15% mix which isn't real strong, it will also pacify the steel and prevent the flash rust from forming too quickly
There is a product around (at least down here in Oz) called CLR, Calcium, Limescale and Rust remover that will work just fine, remember to read the directions
An even better mix is sodium nitrite at about 4 grams per litre it will stop it dead in its tracks for about 4 days, as always drain and dry
you can then drop your two stroke oil/petrol mix in there and whilst the oil still coats the surface you will get no rust, provided you get no water in
Kero is a good substitute as well as it doesn't evaporate quickly and its cheap

Molasses, it works and tastes nicer than vinegar, but I wouldn't put it on my chips.

Vinegar is also great for cleaning the bbq plate, and your sinuses as you go!
Where does one buy sodium nitrate?
What's the active part(s) of CLR?
