If you have a vehicle that is not insured or no tax on it then you have to sorn it Statutory Off Road Notice And renew every twelve months Think it's coming to an end soon though

Taxing and insuring is a way the DVLA keep a record of all vehicles used on the public highway. A SORN, is way the DVLA keep a record of vehicles not in use and off the highway. In order to cut their costs of annually renewing the SORN, they intend to do a 'oneoff' SORN, but as yet have not said when. A SORN is valid for up to 12 months and must then be renewed if the vehicle is still kept off the road. So as said it is an annual thing. A few vehicles are exempt. A SORN applies to all vehicles taxed on or after 31st January 1998, including those vehicles which tax does not have to be paid for (for example, vehicles in the historic or disabled tax class). So personally, my LC2 is exempt because it has been off road since 1996.

I've done a couple this year, and when 'renewing' online it's coming back as already notified, so looks like from last year, it's a lifetime sorn until the vehicle is taxed again. I beleive if the vehicle is taxed it has to be insured, but it can be insured, and not taxed, but on the SORN register, confusing or what?

Yeah no renewals anymore, they are permanent now unless you change it.

One major problem I see with the SORN system. Once a vehicle is SORN, it can not be unSORNed accept if it is retaxed or it passes to a new owner. For most people, you Sorn it, get any complete months refund. But there is nothing that says you must surrender the disc to the DVLA for refund. Scenario.... You decide to revamp your LC. You put it away in the shed and leave the tax disc on it. There is only 3 months left so not worth pursuing a refund. You SORN the LC and decide to use your GXR in the meantime for work. A week later GXR gets hit by a truck and your only transport is to get the LC back out of the shed. The law states, to be on the highway your vehicle should have current third party insurance, MOT and Road tax. But if you were targeted by plod, their information would be seen as the LC was SORN and has illegally appeared on the highway. Interesting to know which way the hammer would fall.

I guess in that scenario I wouldn't bother with the SORN until the tax had run out on the LC (when they sent the reminder). Like you say it wouldn't be worth a refund for 3 month's tax and you would insure the LC whether you were using it or not. For what it's worth I actually agree with the continuous tax and SORN system as it means that the untaxed/uninsured cars that are driven around by the scroats are easier for the police to spot and impound.
