Right, you're looking at a Blue Turd! The other cars in the image (except the white Skoda pickup to the left) are cars that I've had in the past.
The Saab was my first car (and a fun car!) that my dad now use. I had it for a few months and drove it like I stole it, then I bought the Renault which my mom has now stolen from me. The Renault was (is) almost as fun as the Saab, it actually has fairly decent power to weight ratio (for being what it is I mean).
Then I bought the VW. I've always liked VW Golf, especially mk2-3-4. I went to see an mk3 and it was shite. It felt completely shot. It rattled like a barrel of nuts and bolts. I also checked ot an Audi 80 (I like them too lol). It was VERY fresh in the body, but it went like crap and it was generally worn down as hell in the drive train. The interior also smelled bad.
Eventually I found this Golf. It didn't look very fresh. I'm sure I could have found a better one if I just waited longer, but I couldn't stand not having a car. Sure, it has it's issues, it's an old car and it needs alot of love. But at least it didn't feel REMOTELY as "worn-the-f**k-out" when driving it as the other cars I looked at. I did find a very nice Renault Megane 16v though, but the owners idiot brother had jacked the car up in the wrong area of the sill and squashed it in. As if that's not bad enough, the idiot did the exact same mistake on the opposite side of the car!
Anyway, finding a car in Sweden is a nightmare. People are idiots and they can't take care of their cars. It's the sad truth, you just can't expect too much from a used car over here. So what do you do? You make it a long term project, and build the god damn car up from scratch yourself!
That is my plan. I want a car which I KNOW every nut and bolt has been properly put together. It's not gonna happen overnight though. I have no idea how long it'll take, but I think as soon as I get the chassis freshened up, things will move on quickly. It won't be a show car with a super paint job or anything, I just want to get it freshened up to a standard that I feel is decent for everyday usage.
It needed a new wheel bearing, and the brakes was clogging up with rust 'n grime so I took care of them aswell. The bottom caliper float pins was almost completely stuck.
As you can see, the hub is missing the ABS-sensor. Long story short - my friend squashed it out of there with a screwdriver, a hammer and brute force (he had my permission though). Obviously I'm going to try getting the ABS system working. I have to, otherwise it don't think it'll pass the MOT.
Copper paste, mmmmm (not in the actual bearing obviously, just to hopefully protect from rust)
Now how the f**k do you get the stuff together again? (lol j/k, I'm an expert baby)
Then I put the summer wheels on. Two of the rims are scratched on the edges though (I didn't do it, although I'll admit it could have been me lol).
Unfortunately, these wheels are shite. They're too wide (I think the tires are 245 mm wide), and that combined with the fact that all the shocks are shot
makes for a helluva flimsy ride.
After putting the rims on and taking a few steps back, I noticed how rusty and f-ugly the rear brake drums was (luckily not visible on image). I'll see if I can clean them up some day.
Apart from that, I've discovered some rust under the car that I didn't see when I first inspected it, there's a big rust hole in the front part of the floor (just behind the front tire), so I know I have alot of metal work to look forward to.
I'm not sure if I will keep this chassis or try getting hold of a cleaner lump to start off with though. It depends on how much rust I'll find on the blue turd, and/or what blown up Mk3 spareparts car I can get hold of.
I'll see what I'll do, but hopefully every little job and fiddle I do on the car will at least not make it become worse than it already is, so it can only go forward from here.
