I use Athena gaskets all the time. For me, only a thin smear on the base gasket, not the head gasket. For head gasket I do one or 2 heat cycles without coolant before final torque down. Re-check after first couple of runs out. No problems so far.

The gaskets I make and sell fit very well and are considerably cheaper than OEM. They have been tested on many road and track bikes with no issues. I even make Siamese base gaskets so you know there will be no overlap in the middle. I use Robs gaskets all the time. On a par with Gen Yam. I order the thickness I need, so get the clearances I need. He's superb to deal with, fast service and a great price. I only use Gen Yam seals, I have to use copper head gaskets for my multi- cylinder Frankenstein creations

I've also used Athena several times without any issues so far.
Would love to know how thick the head gaskets are compared to stock.

No sealant with Athena head gaskets. I fit and torque to about 90%. Then do a couple of heat cycles, no coolant. Then add coolant, torque to 100%. Another heat cycle or 2. Then re-check torque after the first couple of rides. Always worked for me. Good luck with it.

Ive made numerous gaskets in the past with the exception of head gaskets.
When i was 13 i had a field bike and made gaskets from cornflake boxes (read had no money) and believe it or not they worked pretty well. Used brown paper as well. Lol

Hi thanks for quick reply, so would you say torque to 15 first then, then 17 after 2 heat cycles would be fine, what would you say is the best thing to remove any old gasket, thanks again stay safe.

Had to check yr numbers as you quoting ft.lbs where I use NM's but yes that sounds about right.
I carefully use a stanley blade but sideways, you can buy plastic equivalents but I've always seem to have managed without it digging in, just take your time.

Contrary to Shaun I will torque to full spec unless stated different in the maintenance manual. Then just like Shaun I will re-torque after a few heat cycles and check again after a bit of use, like a few months later.
If Shaun only does a few heat cycles without loading the engine I'm sure his method works.
Me I don't like to re-invent the wheel unless I have to.

We all have our own little ways of doing things. I use a combination of Tobyjugs and shaunthe2nd. I torque to full torque, but no coolant. A few heat cycles, then add fluid, check torque again. Then check torque after first run, then again at a later date after a few miles under its belt. Forgot to say this is with OEM gasket. Jon
